Especially car related?

I'm going there for 5 days mid November, I've been to Houston before but never to Austin.
Anyone has anything interesting to recommend?
Thank you in advance

Two crap ideas…

Terry Black’s BBQ. Was at a Dallas one this week and the beef rib is off the scale good.

Buc-ee’s ‘destination gas station’. Fits the car criterion though. Ish. I didn’t go but my local colleagues were telling me you have to go in order to understand Texas.

Both - apparently - Texas icons.

Have fun!

Head up towards New Braunfels.

Austin is worth heading out for a few beers. Decent nightlife scene.

Get some bbq food also.

I lived in Austin for 6 months so know it pretty well. I didn't have a car so can't make too many recos on that side of things.

Salt Lick is okay, but I would say Franklin's for BBQ. Get there early, take a cooler with some beers / soft drinks and hang out with some friendly locals whilst you wait for it to open. Then eat some epic BBQ smilehttps://franklinbbq.com/about

You might be there for a UT football game - if you've not been before, it is EPIC. Go to the tailgate before for a true college football experience. They know to do sports. Their uni football stadium is bigger than Wembley - 100k seats! Insane https://texassports.com/sports/football/schedule/2...

For my favourite chicken wings when I was there, go to Pluckers. https://www.pluckers.com/

Trudy's is a local institution for texmex - try the stuffed avo. https://trudys.com/

I used to like Kerbey Lane for diner style food, their queso is the st! https://kerbeylanecafe.com/

Head to Rainy St for street foody, craft beery type stuff.

At the weekend, Sixth St is the spot. You have "dirty sixth" which is the east side of the drag. I personally think this is the best spot - go bar hopping, loads of live music, lots of fun. West Sixth is the 'posh' side and it's still fun, but it's more expensive and a bit of an older crowd.

Now you can see why I came home 10kg heavier!

New Braunfels is nice.

Zilker Park is nice for a picnic. Get some kayaks out on Ladybird Lake.

You might be just in time for the end of the season to watch the bats fly out from under the bridge - pretty cool. Get there early as can be hard to find parking.

Apart from that, just have fun! Austin is an amazing city and you'll have a very different experience to when you were in H-town.

22s how long ago were you there? I agree with all you’ve written but Rainey Street is unrecognisable now. We were there in April having been a few times before and it’s mad how much it’s changed, no longer the cool little bars and street food more high rise condos and loud club music now. A victim of its own success.

Oh really! What a shame. It was 2015 so shame it sounds like it's moved on from what it started at!

I've been wanting to head back for a while but with the California exodus to Texas I almost don't want to ruin it for myself!

If you end up in New Braunfels this pecan candy store is to die for -

https://www.texaspecancandy.com/ It’s close to the center.

Austin itself is lovely though - enjoy!

That’s probably about the first time I went there.

I love Austin and believe or not you can now go east of I-35 without getting robbed, even that’s hipster central now!

I think I prefer San Antonio now.

South Congress Street
- I'd say this is one of the best bits
- lots of cool shops, bars, and restaurants.
- Make sure you head to Allens Cowboy Boots shops - its sooo Texas!
- Magnolia for breakfast
- Joann's South Congress Motel - great history and lots of fun

Dirty Sixth Street
- Friends Bar was our favourite for all day music

Terry Blacks for BBQ

The original Homeslice

The YETI shop.

Explore Austin in general, there's loads of places. It's a lot of fun.

As mentioned, Franklins BBQ is THE bbq place in all of Texas, but, the queues are pretty huge, i walk by at 8am an the queue was already snaking around the building, and they dont open until 11, and was told that some of the stuff may be sold out by the time we would get in, estimated at 2pm!

Needless to say the missus was not impressed so i never did savor the legend of Franklins.. maybe your have better luck, but be prepared

Tacos tacos tacos is the way for queue free food, really great stuff (compared to NY where i live) we got some awesome breakfast tacos from a mobile caravan in a parking lot!

Plus grab your self an ice cream at Amy's

Then see if there is any bull riding competitions going on for a full 'yew haw ' American cowboy experience!

Slightly O/T.

I visited Austin many years ago to visit a friend. Her husband was a lecturer at the University there.

I was amazed to see a nodding donkey pumping up oil on campus!

Carry on.
