Hi all,

I'm looking for some inspiration, pre-Covid myself and Mrs Freak used to go away for a few weekends a year, either a swanky Air BNB or snazzy/boutique hotel. We've done the usual places, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't revisit now post-Covid.

I guess we like the usual stuff, good food, scenery, stuff to see/do, that could be hiking in the hills, going to the theatre, museums, pretty much anything.

Rather than spending hours on TripAdvisor, Air BNB and numerous other sites I thought I'd ask the PH collective where they'd recommend and why, places to stay, visit, stuff to do, recommendations for food etc.

Fire away.

Moor hall in aughton , 15 mins away from Liverpool is very nice and has 2 stars , we stayed the night in 1 of only 7 rooms and had the taster menu with wine flight .
Then head up for a night Liverpool for a dose of reality .

Cheers, that's a good shout and not too far.

No probs , it’s pricey for a night away with dinner but it’s worth it as a one off .
I questioned an additional charge of £80 for some Chardonnay on our bill in the morning and the receptionist cheerily said “ oh I’m sorry , that was for a glass of Chardonnay on the table behind “
And there’s me thinking £80 was expensive for a bottle of white !

If you think you've done 'the usual stuff', whatever that means, do something different. Maybe challenge yourselves to do something truly memorable.

Drive the north coast 500. Climb Snowden, Kayak in the lake district, Cycle the IOW.

Much greater sense of satisfaction than just spending money on a fancy bed for the night.

I've just spent a weekend at the Ilsington Hotel and Spa in Ilsington, Devon. It's right on the edge of Dartmoor, lots of pretty villages around, good pubs, cafes etc. Food, accommodation and service all excellent.

I should maybe be more specific, apologies. We are pretty active, we've hiked quite a bit around the UK, kayaked and cycled also. It's more about the locations and the specifics. As an example earlier this year Mrs Freak booked a weekend break at a country lodge (Air BNB) which was 45 mins away, I did question why so close, but what it did was open our eyes to the countryside there, local meals, walks, scenery.

We live in Staffs so for weekends away we're not going try and get to the NC500 (done it a few times over the years), or the IOW, so a few hours drive or train etc (Crewe/Stafford stations are close by).

Northumberland in general, the cost is amazing.

Holy Island/ Bamburgh are beautiful.

Southsea, at the other end is also nice for a weekend.

I've just had a couple of days in Northern Ireland. Less than an hour from a variety of UK airports, lovely countryside.

Weirdly that's one bit of the world I haven't visited other than for work, and I was looking at this area before I posted.

I'd probably get shot for this, but I'd probably try and tie this in with the NW200. Not sure Mrs Freak would approve.

I echo the shouts for Northumberland and the Crab & Lobster.

If you’re looking for something different - whilst I’ve not done one myself - a colleague has just come back from a foraging weekend which they loved. It was a gift and something they wouldn’t have ever thought of doing, but might be something to consider.

That's where we went, we stayed with a friend who lives a few miles from there. Nice bit of coastline if you like walks etc.

I've been all over NI, but usually there for work. I've liked most of what I've seen there.

Have a look at Swinton Park near Ripon - lovely hotel in a nice area.

Very close to the Black Sheep Brewery as well!

If your considering the north east coast “ beadnell towers “ have rooms in the hotel and also apartments with excellent parking .
We stay there and walk up the coast to sea houses and onto bamburgh . It’s a nice way to fill in a few hours although ultimately there’s not to much there and the better walk down the coast brings you to another village where there’s the “ joiners arms “ but there’s not much there either , I’ve probably been spoilt by spending to much time in this area when younger !
It is lovely though , yellow sandy beaches rather than the brown ones we’ve got on the west coast !
