I've got to go to a works do in London later this week. For some reason I hate trying to get around London. I'm far more familiar with the subway in Paris which I find far more intuitive than the London system.

Anyway, I need to get from Kings Cross to Waterloo on Thursday lunchtime and then the reverse Journey on Friday lunchtime. I need to meet up with colleagues so I can't afford to be faffing around trying to work out the underground system when I arrive.

What card/ticket do I need for this journey please? Where do I get these from?

Does anyone know which route would be best for me to take around lunchtime each day?

Use contactless, either debit card or phone.

Go whichever route google maps says at the time (probably Jubilee line and Victoria line, changing at Green Park).

Pay using your contactless credit/ debit card. Just tap it on the yellow readers on the barriers at the start and the end of your journey.

Simples.

You can use any contactless credit / debit card across the whole of the TFL network, and it will automatically cap your spend

Strongly recommend you download Citymapper (or just use their website) as it'll have live times and take account of any disruption. Google Maps works well, too.

Seriously?

Just use contactless phone/card to pay. Google will tell you the route, probably jubilee line/Victoria line.

Thanks for the comments.

I was hoping to get receipts so I can claim back expenses. Is there any way to get one when paying contactless?

Dark blue line (piccadilly) southbound KX to Leicester Sq. Change for the black line (northern) southbound to Waterloo.

Just take a debit card or credit card and tap it on the card reader at the barriers.

Do the same in reverse to get back.

Go to accounts.tfl.gov.uk and sign up. You can then add your card(s) and it will show your previous journeys.

From memory you can create an account, then link your contactless card and it'll show you your journey and transaction history. But those journeys will cost about £3 each way, so honestly probably not worth the hassle of submitting the receipts!

Probably not. But you can show your employee the TFL payment on your bank statement instead.

For routes use Google maps on your phone and it’ll work everything out for you, including how many stops to stay on for. Just type you destination then click on the train symbol

Get a cab, underground is not so nice, cabs do receipts as well.

I saw a figure of £14 for a day pass on the TFL website, but I can live with £3.

It must be many years (10?) since I was last on the London Underground as I don't remember any of this contactless payment option. I'm sure I had to feed a paper ticket into the barrier or scan a paper ticket barcode last time. Contactless sounds much easier! Thanks for the help all

Oyster contactless payment card was introduced nearly 20 years ago...

If you've not tried it use the citymapper app, it was a gamechanger for me as an infrequent visitor to London.

Contactless does make the ticket thing easy.

As a non-London resident, I would always take the Victoria Line from Kings Cross to Oxford Circus and then the Bakerloo to Waterloo.

The reason for this is that to change trains you just have to stay on the same level and walk across to the other platform and don't have to mess around going up and down escalators or walk miles from the Victoria to the Jubilee Line (I'm looking at you, Green Park).

I always did this when I was working in Paris to get to/from the Eurostar - made it a lot less hassle when travelling with a suitcase.

Other routes may be a bit quicker and have nicer trains, YMMV.

If you take this route get on the front of the Piccadily line train, when you get off at Leicester Square turn to your left, there's then a very short walk (up a 'half-flight' set of stairs and round 2 corners (if memory serves me correctly)) to the Southbound Northern Line platform. You'll then enter the Northern line platform at what will be the front of the train.

Depending where your journey to King's X starts you might also be able to a get a Teavelcard inclusive with your train ticket; might be handy if there's the chance this works do will role from one place to another.

fk me.

This country is beyond help hehe

FWIW it will be bakerloo/Victoria changing at Oxford circus as that is just over the platform.

Alternatively you can get a cab, the 59 bus from York way, a bike, walk, anything really.
