Hi all,

Currently in Pisa with the missus, supposed to be flying back tomorrow to Manchester. Also supposed to be proposing tonight!

I wasn't aware until this afternoon but apparently the Italian ATC staff are striking tomorrow.

We had just arrived into Florence by train when we got an email to say flight cancelled please book the next available flight, due to signal issues it took around an hour and by that time the Sunday flight (the next available) was booked up so I've had to select Monday mornings 0620 flight.

The email also said go to the airport Ryanair desk to sort it all out so we cut our day short in Florence and headed there. But there isn't a desk at Pisa, was on hold for about 1.5 hours trying to call their CS before giving up and Twitter CS have been useless.

The accomodation we are currently in till tomorrow is full so we have booked another hotel through booking.com for the extra 3 nights.

How Likely am I to get the extra accomodation and extra food refunded from Ryanair? I also have Barclays travel pack plus which has Aviva insurance. Am I better off claiming from them?

Anybody had to claim for similar in the past? Not looking for compo just want the extra expenses back!

I doubt RyanAir have any liability as it is outside of their control

I'd be claiming on the travel insurance

Apparently Ryanair Italia staff are also striking. I've made initial contact with Aviva (Barclays insurance).

What time was your flight scheduled to depart Pisa?

Disregard, I found the list of protected flights and that isn’t one of them. Travel insurance it is I’m afraid. Can you not return with a different carrier sooner? your insurance would cover that.

Or take the train up to Nice, perfect journey.. good luck with the proposal.

Travel Insurance will cover any lay overs, drop them a call, book yourself somewhere comfy on the coast.

I have spoken to Aviva and they have said as long as we weren't aware (UK media covering) the strikes before we left it should be covered. First news article I can find is from after we left the UK.

They however won't cover food apparently.

Semi result this morning.

Ryanair have agreed to pay for our hotel, train tickets and some of the food/coffee/soft drinks. They have rejected the non-itemised receipts, even though I have been on the websites of the companies and listed the items my self and prices.

They have however rejected compensation under EU261 as it was "out of their hands", I've replied saying the Ryanair Italia staff strikes aren't out of your hands.

I have taken the complaint forwards with the Aviation ADR, turns out they are about a 5 minute drive from my house.

Still waiting to hear from Aviation ADR and Barclays but the Ryanair money has finally come into my account just now. So were probably only 50% out of pocket now.
