We're looking to hike the Snowdon horseshoe this weekend via Crib Goch and Y Lliwedd. The parking at Pen-y-Pass needs to be pre-booked and is outrageously expensive. Which in case of bad weather means we'll probably forfeit it.

There seems to be a couple pay and display lay-bys along the A498 and A4086. Does anyone have any experience how early at this time of year we'll need to get there to secure a spot and what the charge is for a day (10 hours or so)?

As a possible alternative, we stayed in Llanberis, got the bus to the start of the pyg track (pen-y-pass?), and came back down Llanberis pass and walked to the B&B. I'm pretty sure the busses run to all the popular start points making it easy to come down a different way than you went up

Is £18 really that outrageous for the convenience?

We parked further along the road toward Llanberis in the park and ride on one of our visits last year, I can’t remember how much it cost but it wasn’t crazy. The bus is the “Sherpa” but it doesn’t go as often as I would have liked so the second time we just stumped up the extra few quid to have the car there at the bottom when we’d finished.

The Sherpa buses go from all over the area so worth looking to see if there’s one that suits your itinerary. I can’t remember the score with the lay-bys but we did find the “secret pool” having parked in one of them and I don’t recall paying to park there but there may have been a time limit. Sorry I can’t help more with that.
