Hurricane Fiona in DR
Discussion
Me and Mrs Ozone are sitting in our hotel in Punta Cana waiting for Huricane Fiona to arrive on the East coast. We've never experienced weather like the forecast.
Everything is strapped down and the coconuts have been cut from the trees.
Hopefully everyone here will be OK, the minibar is full and we have Vodka, Whisky and Rum.
Any other PHers in the area and any tips?

I should of flown out today. The Mrs spoke to Tui early yesterday asking to change the holiday because of the storm. They wouldn’t at that point. 22:00 last night she gets an email saying our flight has been moved to Tuesday...
We are only going away for a week anyway so an even shorter holiday is not the best. Yes it’s an act of god. But we only booked last week, wouldn’t tui have information on upcoming storms etc. Also the fact that we asked to change and wouldn’t.
We were lucky that we caught the email last night as we should of had an early start today.
Sorry about the moan! Hope you keep safe!

Well, we have been confined to our hotel room since 8pm last night and had a very windy and wet night and didn't get much sleep. Thankfully we still have power and Internet and cold food was delivered to our room to last us today as we have to stay put for the rest of the day.
A few trees down and a lot of branches and leaves everywhere but haven't been out for a look around as it's still very stormy. The hotel seem to have a very good job to keep things safe and under control for us thankfully.
Mrs is happy as she can watch the funeral :-)

I was in Florida when Irma hit.
All the patio furniture had to be submerged into the swimming pool etc.
Lots of homes temporarily boarded up.
We vacated the villa and booked into a hotel for safety and security which was the right thing to do.
The worst night I was awake all night when it hit us and the glass in the windows in the hotel room was visibly bending to a real extreme. Lots of cladding torn off the hotel facades. Pool area totally destroyed.
Curfews in action. First time Disney had ever closed. All supermarkets devoid of anything on the shelves. Power cuts for days afterwards. Eventually ran out of food we stocked up on and needed something to eat and had to wait 2hrs for a McDs - everything else was still closed or without power.
Wouldn’t want to experience it again tbh.

Hope everybody in its path stays safe.
We went to the Hilton La Romana resort in DR last month.
It was interesting to see the architecture of the main buildings there.
They have very, very solid concrete frame structures with lightweight, wooden lattice style - almost sacrificial - roofs.

Yep, safest place to be is in a modern hotel in this situation. They are very industrial looking for a reason. They use a lot of concrete in their construction and the glass is usually very strong stuff. They have very, very solid concrete frame structures with lightweight, wooden lattice style - almost sacrificial - roofs.
Its just about to move off shore, still gusts of 60-70mph in places but its dropped down on the south side now to 20-30mph.
I’m on a Facebook group for a the Grand Bahia in Punta Cana - from pictures and reports there the buildings are fine, but lots of shingles off roofs, and and a good deal of water in rooms from ceilings and windows. It will be a whole lot worse for the locals in less well built homes.
Luckily our hotel is about 6 years old and very sturdy so probably helped but we did get water leaks in the room but very minor. My wife opened the curtains in the night and said the window glass was flexing a lot.
The wind has dropped and the rain stopped so the cleanup is starting. Hopefully we'll start to get back to some sort of mormality in the next few days.
Got to feel sorry for the locals in shacks.
