MIL and Whiff want to watch funeral on TV, fine, but not really my thing. I planned to take the bairn swimming but now that's shut and so is my gym (which has a pool and softplay)

So... thinking about driving down to Brighton, they have a small park, on the seafront, get some fish and chips and an ice cream, weather looks OK, not boiling but not raining either.

Question is, if i go will ANYTHING be open ? or will all food/drink/toilet establishments be shut.

I'd take a packed lunch, and make sure you've sufficient petrol.

Rule of Thumb (but far from being definitive) if it's part of a chain then it will most likely be closed. If it's a little indie then it's 50-50 whether it will be open.
Adjust ratio to suit.

I was thinking of heading out and wondered the same.

We have been looking into this as Monday is my birthday and we are away on holiday (in England)

Pretty much everything is closed during the funeral itself. Things that are normally open on bank holidays are opening some time after the funeral. For example, Dominos pizza opens at noon instead of 11am and most chains (eg McD’s, supermarkets, etc are opening at 5pm)

Most attractions (zoos, etc) seem to be closed for the day

I think you might struggle for something to eat in Brighton until at least mid afternoon

Has somebody died? I hadn't seen it on the news.

I heard it's one of the Royals - if one of them farts it gets in the press. Couldn't have been anyone important - apparently, someone has already stood in to do the job.

Going back to the thread, I was planning on doing stuff in the garage but if not that then probably go out cycling, roads should be quiet, take a nice packed lunch, back home, a few beers and look forward to the big bank holiday film whatever that will be.

It was nice of Liz Truss to give us all a day off just because she's got the job.

Starting like that it sounds like she should have a Field day.

Has anyone noticed how depressing TV has got recently - everyone's wearing black FFS!!

Just fill up the car with fuel and have a drive on quiet roads. Take your own sandwiches.

Sorted!

I live in a popular costal resort and the fish and chip shops all look to be closed.
Pubs will be open though. Fish and chips in the pub?
I’m going to the pub after recovering from covid. Wife sitting in watching the funeral and crying I expect.

Without going to off thread I’ve had enough now. I respect immensely QE2s service but it seems to have dragged on now.
The bloody BBC are milking it for every second.

Had an email from Welcome Break saying they were, but it wasn't clear which outlets within the services would be though

Greene King pubs and their kitchens will be open for watching the service, mourning into your pint and reflection.

Just dont expect live music, bingo, gaming machines etc to be on.

They are all open for fuel, toilets, food etc but with a more limited food selection depending on the franchisees.
