As above, what is this all about?

We're flying out to the states for Thanksgiving and planning to meet adult son for a weeks roadtrip

Looking at the usual accomodation websites Ive noticed that not only is the GBP worth naff all but many US hotels offer rooms with 2 double beds and my mind is boggling as to why this should be the case

Is there a big swinging scene in the States or is the local population so fat that couples need a double bed each?

Im honestly struggling to sell the boy the concept that its fine and dandy to sleep in the same room as his parents - quite right too - but there must surely be a reason as to why many/most US hotels are set up this way

Opinions welcome

Yes, I've come across this several times. No clue really.

Was helpful on one occasion when MIL, SIL and nephew all stayed in one room (when nephew was <10 and spent a most of his time with his mum and granny.)

(Mrs FTR is American.)

It does seem to happen here too, sometimes.

I quite like it, I sleep in one of the beds and put my stuff on the other.

Not unusual in the UK either, Hanbury Manor has quite a few rooms that I've stayed in with two queen beds, you get a nice big room so not sure what the issue is or why you think it means you have to share the room with your adult son, that's a bit weird.

As a family with a young child it's ideal for us. Normally we had the option of two queens or one king....

US queen beds can be as big as a UK king. Some US rooms are huge - two beds seems to be the way they fill them.

It’s as you state - so the room can accommodate a family group.

In terms of motels etc it's because they are largely used by contractors etc who share rooms to reduce costs

Sleeping in separate beds is not uncommon you know.

They are a Godsend! As soon as my wife goes into her spider sleeping position, arms n legs every where, usually with a knee into the small of my spine. Rather than do the time honoured traditional couple fight for space in the bed, I can just decamp to the other bed and get some sleep. At 3am, I have zero desire for an argument about moving her bloody knee or wrestling the duvet.

I have American relatives, they use them because they are cheap/tight and it means they can fit 2 adults and 2 kids into the one room.

As said, they can be handy if staying as a couple to have somewhere to throw your suitcases and clothes onto.

It's a twin room - very common across the world. Who the fk wants to sleep in a single bed?

Yep, just answer name for a twin room.

Actively seek these out when me and my son go to the States as you’ll get a bigger room and no sharing and no stumping up for two rooms.

We used to book these rooms for holidays in the USA when the kids were younger, too young to have their own room.

Never had a problem.

Don’t do this. https://www.fantasticpestcontrol.co.uk/blog/how-to...

It’s very common for American hotels to have two beds. It’s useful sometimes and others just waste. But from the hotel perspective it means they can offer flexible accommodation

Yeah, exactly. There's enough to deal with in life already, without making staying in a nice hotel dangerous and scary!

Sorry. It’s not dangerous and scary, just about minimising bringing little friends home.

Now if you DO want scary, befriend one of the cleaners and take an ultra violet light with you :-)

I resemble that remark!

That's what we do when we holiday over there.

1 bed is the ‘dry’ bed (sleeping) and the other is the ‘wet’ bed (shagging).
