Given it’s a few years since I last renewed and I cannot remember what I had for tea yet alone 9 years ago … it’s coming up to renewal time - passport will be 10 in December I was thinking of applying for a new one now. However I need to use the current one in 5 weeks time,

So should I just wait until I get back

Or can I apply now and use whichever I have before going away, however that won’t work if I need to send the old one off straight away and the new one takes 10 weeks

Bite the bullet and pay fastrack

Here’s hoping you never renewed it early last time. You may be going nowhere.

Don't you need a minimum of 6 months on it?

Less than 10 years when you leave and 3 months when you come back from the EU

BUT it’s not 10 years if you renewed it earlier last time have a look as dates are different. Loads of stuff in media about this last few years.

The only issue is if I have to send the old passport off and it takes longer than 4 weeks I’m stuffed, I might as well wait, come back and then renew. Or just bite the bullet and pay £177.

If you do it online with a code etc you should get it back in a week or so. Look on the Passport Turnaround thread.
