Road trip through Europe
Discussion
I've got an extra week off work in a couple of weeks time and nothing planned. My wife will be at work, Daughter at Uni, son at School.
Options that spring to mind is a road trip on my own across Europe. I've never driven outside the UK so would need to think of everything required. I live near Glasgow and thought about possible routes.
Glasgow to Hull ferry.
Overnight to Rotterdam.
Next ?
Calais to Dover.
Dover to Glasgow.
Open to suggestions on other possible routes, would be looking at 3 to 4 days max.
My other choices would be just to grab a cheap flight and spend a few days in the sun somewhere or buy the wife a new carpet and do some DIY!! 😂😂

I did a trip last week that took in the south of Germany - Black Forest, near the Swiss border, with a trip to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart on the way. Some good roads and scenery in Southern Germany, neevr been there before.
We have done that a few times over the years, I love that part of Germany. We had a brilliant trip, stopping in Colmar, hopping over the Rhine to Freiburg, then exploring the Black Forest, then over to Munich and over the border to Salzburg. The scenery is spectacular and if you do it in Septamber, the Octoberfest has already started.limpsfield said:

Porsche Museum is a good shout, that would be worth a visit. I have thought about European breakdown cover, UK stickers for my number plates, Covid status is already on my phone app. What about crossing borders and toll charges, easy enough? Sat nav guidance ok? GMac1 said:

Google maps/Waze are brilliant in Europe, and breakdown cover makes sense. You'll need an inexpensive kit with the requirements for France/Europe eg hi vis vests, warning triangle etc.For toll charges get one of the toll tags for France, which lets you just drive through the tag only lanes, and bills you later. I got the Emovis tag as LeShuttle had an offer. Crossing borders is seamless, in fact I didn't know I'd crossed into Germany until I saw the road signs.
You'll also need an emissions sticker for certains towns in France and Germany, they can be ordered online and are cheap (a few Euros).

In no more than 3 or 4 days?
Well not the entirety of the two countries, Oslo up to Lillehammer then dip into Sweden for the drive back down to Copenhagen.Lincsls1 said:
What's the motor you plan on using?
I'm going with my Volvo as it's my first time travelling through Europe. I'd rather go in comfort with Sat Nav, cruise control, cost on fuel etc. I'd love to pick up Switzerland on the route but seems too far. Maybe best just with Netherlands, Germany and France for my first attempt.

Might be worth look at Harry's Garage Youtube channel. He used to do some videos on good driving roads as he drove down to the south of France.I'd love to pick up Switzerland on the route but seems too far. Maybe best just with Netherlands, Germany and France for my first attempt.

I already have high viz, triangle, first aid kit. Just been looking at the emissions sticker, says if I order it can take a few weeks for delivery. Can you buy over there as I'm now planning on going in 2 weeks time. Do you need one for for each country? Do I need a lightbulb replacement kit as well? Thanks for the tips, will look at getting toll tags. For toll charges get one of the toll tags for France, which lets you just drive through the tag only lanes, and bills you later. Harry Garage u tube videos are good. For a few days Baden Baden and Black Forest is a good option.
I am off in the morning for a 12 day trip.
Channel tunnel to Calais then staying Reims for 1 night. Then 1 night in Grenoble. Then driving Route Napoleon ( Harry Garage has a great video of this). Two nights in Nice then on to Tuscany for 4 nights. On the return trip we are staying in Lake Lugano for 1 night then through Black Forest to Baden Baden for 2 nights then home.
If you cut out the Tuscany part you could do Route Napoleon, a few mountain passes and Black Forest in a week.
