Evening All,

Trying to come up with a nice place for the wife and I to spend 4 or 5 days in late september. Issue we have is that we have to keep the flight to 2ish hours. We want somewhere quite chilled and slow paced. Not a super busy city break for example.

Anyone suggest anywhere cool?

+1 for Norwich. The amount of roadworks at the moment really slow the pace of life down.

San Sebastian. A Beautiful, laid back city sitting on 3 fabulous beaches and only a short hop away.

laugh at the sarcastic Norwich comments - I actually had a day/night there recently and found Norwich ok for a mooch around and (quite) a few drinks and nice food. I quite liked it. wink

This, did a long weekend a month ago, if you direct fly into San Seb, only 1 hour 20 mins. Superb place..

Bern. A 'city' but not fast paced, small and twee historic centre with things to do and wander around at your own pace. And bunch of day trips possible to various alps with cable cars. Fly in to Zurich, 1h12 on-time comfortable train to Bern, station walkable to various historic centre hotels (I've used the Bellevue Palace and Best Western, both are good albeit different price points).

Somewhere on the Italian Lakes?
I've really enjoyed visiting Stresa and Riva.

Or Blakeney if Norwich is too exciting.

I was just about to post exactly that - I couldn't think of a better place to spend a few days in September. We'll be there 23rd - 25th Sept.

We’ve just got back from a week there and adored it!

It's lovely indeed. Only downside is the insane prices at restaurants.

Salzburg is a lovely place and not super busy. The airport is ten minutes from the centre, the food and drink are great, the sights magical and the people really cool. There are daily flights from Heathrow and Gatwick which take just under two hours.

Wroclaw in Poland.

First went with work in 2014 and been back for pleasure many times since.

Beautiful city with lots of history and exceptionally good value.

A review from Vogue a few years ago.

I wouldn't stay in their suggested hotel though, I always find an aparthotel close to the square as I prefer the extra space to chill in the lounge area, pour a vodka as you prepare to go out for the evening:

Another suggestion for something quite different... Bergen in Norway. The town itself is interesting, and definitely not like a busy city, you've also got the fjords nearby and you can easily take a train to somewhere Flam with it's amazing lake, mountains and the famous Flam railway.

You can actually fly directly to Bergen from loads of places in the UK - Gatwick, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Shetlands, depending on where you are based. Some of these are smaller, lower altitude planes if the shorter flight time is borne out of a dislike of long times in high pressure aircraft.

Anything specific you want to do whilst there?

I'll have a stab with Picos de Europa National Park. I can't remember if we flew into Santander or Bilbao.

Potes is a nice little town with shops, restaurants etc.

We stayed here which is about 20 minutes up the valley from Potes:

Superb views (we had one of the balcony rooms) - perfect for watching the sun set with a beer or wine. There's plenty of walking in the park, the cable car at Fuente De. There's also some nice coastal towns to visit - I remember we visited Llanes and had a good day there.

It's difficult to go wrong with anywhere around Lake Maggiore or Lake Lugano in Italy.

Yes, that is a brilliant idea. Including Ile de Re of course.
