I find myself in the unexpected but pleasant situation of having a free day in Munich on Tues; I've booked an M3 Comp to hire for the day from BMW World which gives me just under 12 hours with the car and unlimited mileage.

My loose plan is to head south west out of Munich down the (unrestricted) '95' Autobahn towards the Alps but that's where my ideas end. My idealistic imagination has plans of a day thrapping around a few Alpine passes before dropping the car back at 1800 - does anyone with more experience of the area than me have any specific recommendations for routes or specific roads they've enjoyed?

Neuschwanstein castle is great. And good autobahn there too.

I did this a few years ago. It was a very good experience. All worked well logistically (ie car as ordered at right time) although make sure you meticulously video the car before collection. A tiny mark on an alloy I mentioned on check out that I was told not to worry about suddenly became a 90 euro problem on returning it. That argument aside a very fun trip.

I did the 95 South to kochel (a few unlimited sections), then cross country on some more twisty roads on the 11 to krun, 2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, briefly over the border to reutte, then rejoining the 7 north to the 96 and back to Munich. Quite a bit of unlimited on that last 7 and 96 section.

Have fun!

Also to add - give yourself an hour or so in the museum showroom itself!

I did this a few times when I lived in Munich.

One option would be the A95 down towards Garmisch, cross over into Austria, and take the 187, 198 and 200 towards Lindau, before picking up the A96 back into Munich.

Another option (if you want more derestricted Autobahn) would be to take the A92 and A3 towards Passau, then run along the border along some of the country roads down towards Salzburg. Then back along the A8 towards Munich. That's less mountainous, but still a fun drive.

Google reckons it’s 5hr 11 mins to the ring.
Enough time to stick 2 or 3 laps in and get it back before the 12hr deadline ?

I don't have anything helpful to add I'm sorry.. But this sounds like an awesome idea and something I need to plan for next year myself! How much roughly does it cost? I tried googling but there don't seem to be any prices online

Here's the link to the BMW Welt rental page: https://www.bmw-welt.com/en/experience/popups/weit... Prices should appear once you select pick-up and drop-off dates.

Thanks for all the ideas folks, just spending a few minutes mapping out where they'd take me.
It's 190 EUR for the car for 24 hrs (my trip timings mean I can only utilise 12 or so of those hours) plus fuel plus £4 with a third party to insure the £2500 EUR excess.

I did start trying to work out if the hire agreement allows 'ring laps but experience teaches me it'll just make for a stressful day in respect to the timings!

Heading south from Munich is heading into traffic.

I‘d head north towards the Altmühltal or east towards the Bavarian Forest. Fairly empty twisty country roads.

The Autobahn A9 around Roth is the fastest in Germany. I have no idea what your experience is, but fast Autobahn driving isn’t a joke.

This....

Been on it a few times and its beyond nuts when in the unrestricted sections.

Never seen so many high end German cars go so fast.

We had a 1.4 golf and got 120 out of it.

It won't be my first time over 3 figures on the Autobahn but I wouldn't describe myself as experienced! In all honesty I'm not overly interested in spending much of the day trying to max it out in a straight line. I drive a 155mph straight six BMW daily, this one will just get to those speeds a bit more quickly which does not especially excite me.
I'd much prefer some twisty roads and great scenery.

Thanks for the link. Assume only some of the sites have M series cars? I tried BMW World in Munich but they have no dates available. Maybe I'll just submit an enquiry and stop hijacking your thread lol

Best of luck with it and make sure you update us when you've done it!

Excess insurance is definitely a good idea given how officious they were in my experience. I'd read your policy carefully though to check it covers cars of this value. Lots of the mainstream policies are 50k ish max value, which is fine for most rentals but obviously not this car. There was only one mainstream one from what I can remember (think it might have been insurance4carhire but do check) which did 120k.

To report back - great day!

I took HasToBeV8's advice on the first part of the route, headed south on the 95 initially and then took his advice as far as Krun but then headed off towards Innsbruck in the hope of finding more twists. While that quest was partially successful it was a glorious day and still being the end of summer hols there was loads of traffic meaning the opportunity to have a play on the Alpine roads were pretty limited. In the end I decided to cut my plans short a bit and head back up to Munich for 1500 giving myself a few hours at BMW Welt.

There was relatively little traffic on the southern stretches of the 95 so plenty of opportunities to prove that the M3 did have a working limiter at 250km/h. The car was very impressive, a significant step forward over my 2018 340i. The particular example wasn't X-drive and, even on a warm dry day, was struggling for traction until into 3rd. It therefore didn't feel THAT much quicker than my own car under 70 mph but significantly more accelerative over 100. It's the first time I've been able to extensively exercise a 500bhp car at significant 3 figure speeds; it's quite eye opening, getting between 100 and 140 in what felt like 5 or six seconds. I'd argue that the level of performance available is pretty pointless in the UK but the opportunity to (legally) use it on the Autobahn was fab.

In terms of the practicalities, all very straightforward. The car was ready to go at the booked time, we noted a few areas of damage on it before departing and had no arguments at all on my return.

Oddly the M cars are listed under 'BMW Rent München MINI Niederlassung' which is the Mini dealer on the factory site.

Good spot, I'd actually fallen for this one, after reading your post I checked and discovered a value limit of £70k on my policy and an exclusion for 'performance cars'. Luckily I didn't need to claim............

All in a good day out, probably done better on a dry winters day when I'd expect there to be much less traffic in the mountains.

Awesome! An m5 is definitely on my bucket list from there. Then maybe back for an m2 one day!
