NHS Covid pass down - denied boarding
Discussion
Going to Spain, I'd picked up their answerphone message wrong..........why they'd rung me when they were at Mancs rather than go to Google for help I don't know.
Anyway they have got a taxi home and want to know what to do re the holiday, try again the 'morrow but TUI not answering. Bags still in Mancs airport somewhere.

I know its not much help now, but they really should have printed off paper copies.
When we flew in July we only needed them when we got to spain and were never asked for them before, although the Ryanair app did allow you to upload them.
They are going to have to wait until tomorrow now but they may lose the holiday, Tui don't have to help as its not their fault.

FFS this has actually made me fking angry.
My son flew to Spain on Wednesday so just missed the app going down but then he isn't vaccinated.
Had to get a test to fly and fill in the online Spanish health form which then sends a QR code to his phone.
I just hate the fact that these days you need a smartphone and a working printer..
Wasn't that long ago when I could travel with just my passport especially as I quite often hadn't bought the ticket, just given a reference and told where to go.
So the fking NHS computer goes down and fks everyone's holidays.
Just great.

A good reminder to people to generate their passes in good time and 'print' them as PDFs onto your phone (or save in the 'Wallet' on Apple phones) rather than showing it directly on the UK app.
I suspect you could even import it to a foreign Covid App and show that.
And also registering on the NHS app can take up to 7 days.I suspect you could even import it to a foreign Covid App and show that.

We always take a paper backup of everything we need to get on a flight, chances are you won't need it, but phones get dropped\left\stolen\don't work, so it's best to have backup.I suspect you could even import it to a foreign Covid App and show that.

Idd. We travel a lot and always print the passes. No way am I trusting an app, the web, and my battery, to get me on a flight.I suspect you could even import it to a foreign Covid App and show that.
Bloody apps.

I think what he’s saying is that the modern smartphone enabled world is great until any of the tech that they are dependent on throws a wobbler. My elderly parents are similar. They are, like many, old skool and prefer to have a bit of paper and that’s it, because they are not smartphone savvy.
Regarding the reliability of the app, these things are great when they work but there’s a massive amount of complexity to them and many technical ‘moving parts’. Any one of these can be susceptible to failure or not work in a live environment even if tested in a pre-prod environment. That’s my bread and butter, techies work to minimise these outages as best we can but there’s times when they are unfortunately unavoidable. I gather this was a relatively short outage which is good, but not if you’re stood at check-in or boarding and being denied. Where is the manual fallback plan then, is the real issue.
FWIW for anything ‘digital access’ I always take screenshots and/or paper copies wherever possible.
The biggest vulnerability with these things is time-sensitive access passes for venues like The O2. They do this - generate a short term QR code in the app to prevent touting - which is great when it works but will leave them with egg on their face when it goes down with 20,000 angry punters waiting to get in.

Never travelled just with a booking reference in my head but not ideal for me.I’d still write it down or photograph it - imagine not remembering it correctly?
Boarding passes, car hire stuff, virus-of-the-moment paperwork etc I always print off hard copies and screenshot it all as well. Then it gets whatsapped and emailed to the wife and kids in case we get separated.
I’d never trust an app to not ruin anything, whether it’s NHS, Ryanair or a concert ticket app. Last holiday involved three countries, hotels, eurotunnel and our dog. We (well, me) had an A4 ring binder full of stuff.
So much for saving paper but I'm completely with you.
One of my boys did his first solo trip to Norway and I printed everything out twice, sent copies via email, WhatsApp and text to myself, his mum and him. Made up a nice little folder for his backpack and I still got a call from him in the morning stuck at Norwegian customs as he couldn't find his Norwegian registration number.
Which was in his backpack and on his phone??
