Included in my bucket list are visits to the Mullin, Petersen and Marconi car museums around Los Angeles. Mrs L would like to accompany me for the rest of the time; we prefer self-catering to hotels.

Our only experience of the area was at the beginning and end of a previous trip; Manhattan Beach and Malibu, which we liked.

Sensibly priced places near the seaside are available though rare; does anyone have experience of staying further inland (Glendale, Pasadena) and is that a better bet?

This was a great retro motel/stay in walking distance of everything Sancta Monica has to offer and includes a kitchen, loads of space for our family of 4 and a full sized kitchen. Great pool also

Not exactly cheap and parking was extra (as per normal for US hotels) but good value for S Monica

I stayed in Pasadena a couple of years a go.

I like the town centre area as it was compact and walkable with plenty of good beer pubs/bars.

Seemed a good base location as everywhere in LA is miles from anywhere else, so there will be plenty of traveling involved wherever you stay.

Also, easy access to the Angeles Forest for a scenic route out of the city.

Few years ago now, but we loved Pasadena. Some amazing architecture, very friendly and a very lively music/arts scene. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Can't remember the hotel but I think it was a Holiday Inn, just off Colorado, but its not massively important anyway as you'll only be using it to leave your bags and sleep!

We did the CA roadtrip with our two teens in 2019 and stayed 4 nights in LA. We picked somewhere fairly accessible for all the things we wanted to do and ended up in Mid Town, here on Wilshere, just a few blocks from the Peterson:

If you prefer self-cater as we do, something like this is great, we had a spacious fully equipped 2-bed apartment in a block with indoor pool & communal BBQ facilities. We paid about £150/night through AirBNB. LA does sprawl but we were able to get to Laurel Canyon, Beverly Hills, Downtown museums, Olympic stadium for a Rams game etc. fairly easily. Its not as Chi-Chi as somewhere like Venice or Malibu but it does tick a lot of convenience boxes at a decent price when you're in a car and there's also plenty of taxis around. Wouldn't stay longer than that but the beauty of that area is you can do multi-stay in different places.
