As per subject, my son is going to study in Italy for a year as part of his U.K. degree, but before he can he needs a student visa from the Italian government and has to have an in person appointment.

The visa requirements include that he show he has an NHS type cover but he also has to have travel insurance and so far I can’t work out if the travel insurance options can cover both areas (emergency medical cover like repatriation as well as local doctor appointment or access to Italian A&E).

Has anyone else who has been through this process post brexit and if so can you share any tips??

The EHIC has been replaced by the GHIC but still offers reciprocal cover AIUI.

Yes. He’s applied for the GHIC but it’s not as straightforward for a student as more paperwork / evidence needed but that in itself doesn’t satisfy the visa requirements. It’s more a nice to have as I can tell.

Thanks. That last link is helpful but I’m still not clear if we will need a separate travel insurance policy to cover repatriation in event of a medical emergency

The visa requirements are not easy to digest.
