Looking for ideas. I have to go to Dallas in a fortnight and come back the next day - I’m now thinking of going from LHR to somewhere else for a week. I’ll be travelling alone, want a chilled time, preferably a flight within the Oneworld alliance so I can use the lounges. Would be nice for it to be an “off the radar” place so far as possible. I just looked at Azerbaijan but didn’t realise the flight time/ cost was high. TIA.

I think options are a bit thin for something truly 'off the radar' (subjective, as always) within a 4/5hr flight from LHR with a One World carrier, but a few possible thoughts (keeping in mind you feel Azerbaijan is too long for what you want):

Helsinki (and Finland in general), 3hrs with Finnair

Amman (for Jordan, in general), 5hrs with BA

Algiers, 3hrs with BA (possible visa complications, though - but a nice and unusual destination all the same although perhaps less chilled than other possibilities)

Zurich, for Liechtenstein, (1.5hrs ish with BA + a couple of hours to Liechtenstein), wonderfully small and well formed lesser visited country for Europe.

Barcelona, for Andorra (2hrs with BA + a few hours to Andorra from BCN). Same as above, nice and less on the radar summer destination. Avoid the winter ski crowds..!

Terceira Island and Ponta Delgada, Azores (4hrs with BA to both).

Some great suggestions there! I’ll do some research.

Madeira, 3.5 hrs flight, tropical climate, might fall into mainstream though.

I'd bin off the return leg and go to central/S America. Venezuela or Columbia are exciting, or maybe an obscure part of the Caribbean.

I need to be in London on the Friday lunchtime - so leave Wednesday, back Thursday, land Friday and off to meetings. Then want to head back to the airport and zip away.

Good luck with booking something unless it's totally last minute - https://www.headforpoints.com/2022/08/02/british-a...

Looking at BA's route map https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/f...
  • Morocco - could do the city thing in Marrakesh and some resort time
  • Estonia - Tallinn is a great city
  • Israel - could spend some time in e.g. Jerusalem and also some time in Tel Aviv or at a beach resort
  • Egypt - not sure what the tourist situation is here right now though
Are all places that stand out as being 'slightly' different and within 4-5 hours flight.

If you wanted somewhere to chill out and not do too much then add Maderia and Malta to this list also. A few of these routes are also pretty good tier point earners if you're paying cash and want to do it as a tier point run.

Tbilisi - Georgia. My favourite place in the world.

Montenegro maybe. Fly to Tivat rather than Podgorica as it's closer to the big things to see like Kotor Bay. Lustica peninsula for peace and isolation.

Belgrade in Serbia is also a great city to explore, and the countryside to the south is spectacular and undiscovered.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am finding it quite infuriating to sort things. But some of the places mentioned will certainly be destinations I’d like to go to and hadn’t considered - even if I can’t make it this time.
