Just been told we are going to Hungry this weekend for my birthday surprise to watch the F1, but due to covid wife had to change flights to Vienna and get car hire. Apparently you need a vignette for both Austria and Hungry. I’m guessing that the Austrian one will come with the hire car, but what do we about Hungry. Do we bother telling the hire company we are going to Hungry, or as it’s all the EU do you need to?

The insurance will cover both countries but it’s always worth confirming. Also worth asking if they have a car that’s already got a valid vignette attached. My current NL hire car had a valid Swiss one when I collected it which was handy as that’s where I was headed. If not, just buy at the border / first petrol station you use.

On the AT side of the border stop at any petrol station and ask for the vignette. It’s not a sticker! You go into the shop (make a note of your Reg plate!) and the assistant will ask for that plate and how long you are in HU etc…. She will then give you a piece of paper to sign + a copy and/or reference number, but this in the glove box. The whole thing is electronic.

If you have to buy an AT vignette, it’s a sticker you put BELOW the uv band on your windshield. But the little tag in your glove box.

Oh and tell the car hire you’re leaving the country! Sometimes there’s an insurance premium or extra charge to take it out of The country.
