Likelihood of Catching Covid on A Flight
Discussion
Finally going on a family holiday later this week - to Cyprus - my children are rally excited as they haven’t been on holiday for 3 years.
Mg only concern is catching covid on the plane - everyone I know that has flown in the last 4 months has caught it on a flight…
Anyone have any idea what the chances are? Is it worth wearing masks on the flight (or are they mandatory)

Flown a few times in last two years and had two “pings” that someone sat near me on the plane had tested positive but, I didn’t catch it.
However went to Crete last month and tested positive three days after being back, so probably caught it on the flight (but could have been airport).
I believe Cyprus have just reintroduced masks when inside but don’t think they are mandatory on planes going out there, although nothing to stop you wearing one.

Covid? You won't even know if you have it. My wife tested positive a few weeks back, headache and felt tired for a few days. Carried on as usual. I slept in the same bed, didn't do anything differently. I didn't get it.
If you are that concerned, why aren't you still hiding behind the sofa? A mask will not protect you. It is questionable whether it does any good at all.

Like to see some real data, someone must have done something scientific?
Personally:
Son number 2 flight back from Stockholm in Feb. pinged by the app, Covid positive 2 days later
Son number 1 flight back from Malta in June, Covid positive 2 days later.
Personally am avoiding flights in favour of driving everywhere and loving it
Fairly high I would say.

Conversely, I got it early July at a work conference. Several others got it too. A few of us were wiped out, others barely anything, some nothing. I gave it to my wife and the effects are still impacting work and home life.jesusbuiltmycar said:

you will have to wear a mask indoors in Cyprus on arrival. Mg only concern is catching covid on the plane - everyone I know that has flown in the last 4 months has caught it on a flight…

Extremely High.
A bit of an exaggeration.I spend my life on aeroplanes for work. I have also for the last 18 months (up to earlier this year) had to be PCR tested firstly to travel, and then once at the other end of travel to get into the paddock (motorsport). And then to get home again.
Flights into 3 figures. PCR's / LF's into the hundreds. No Covid yet. I don't class that as 'Extremely high'!
I have any issues about wearing a mask indoors in public when I get there as I don’t plan on spending much time indoors in public places …
I plan to cycle to the top of Mt Olympus - something I need to do for my own reasons …
Catching covid on the way out may make it impossible

How is a fully grown adult still asking these questions????
Guys, I'm going to a concert tomorrow - might I catch a cold?
You might as well have asked that.

He makes a valid point though. Nobody is interested in Covid any more. As long as you have no underlying health conditions (highly unlikely since you plan to cycle up Mt Olympus) you are unlikely to notice you have it.
You say that but funnily enough it’s been my fitter friends that have suffered worst when they’ve caught. I shrugged it off the first time, second time I was bedridden. Wife was bedridden first time, just cold like symptoms the second time. I returned this week. Mask wearing in Cyprus indoors is mandatory but from what I saw (in hotel and the odd shop) it's not fully adhered to. UK flight probably had 95% people not wearing masks in airport or on plane.
Seemed a fair few lads lads lads who'd been ayia Napa having pretty nasty coughs but no idea whether that's excess drink, smoke and lads lads lads, or covid.
Guess the key thing is, be sensible, manage your risk as you see fit and have an amazing time.

A guy I know was, until recently running 40km a week - he got it 4 weeks ago and still isn’t up to doing a 5K run, reckons it will another 8 weeks until he is back to full fitness …
Others I know have shrugged it off in a couple of days…
The thing is if you are relatively fit and your health takes a knock (like a cold or covid) you recover to 85% quickly but getting back to 100% takes a lot longer
