Lost holiday due to expired issue date on passport

I have just lost my family holiday.

My fault.

I wasn’t aware that you couldn’t enter Greece/eu if your issue date was more than 10 years.
(Mine is 2nd June 12 and had only checked expiration which is March 23)
I doubt I will have any recourse as it is my fault but I am hoping the hotel may allow me to move the booking to later in the year.

There must be other people that are not aware so make sure you check issue date and expiry date.

You carry over any unused validity from the old one up to a maximum (not sure exactly what). Mine was issued in Dec ‘15 and is valid until Jul ‘26 but the EU doesn’t see it that way

It’s been in the news lately as quite a few people have suffered the same issue, including a friend of ours made worse by the backlogs at the passport office. In the old days you’d just get an appointment and pay for the expedited service and all would be well. I hope you find a satisfactory solution Andy.

So if I look in my passport it clearly states expiry of June 24.

I wouldn't try to use it for any trip where I'd be trying to enter another country or be out of the UK past that date.

Am I missing something?

It's the same as an MOT, valid for 12 months, but could have an expiry date 13 months in the future, depending on when it's tested relative to its expiry date.

In the same way, if you renewed your passport within 9 months (I think it was 9) of it expiring then those extra months are kept. I assume that was done to encourage people to renew in good time and not wait until it expired.

So all that mattered was the expiry date, but now, what matters is 10 years from date of issue, which could easy not the same as said expiry date.

The problem is you can be issued a passport with an expiry date of more than 10 years but some places use 10 years from the issue date regardless of the expiry date?

Yes, we’re talking about the issue date beig more than 10 years ago. Nothing about expiry date.

In my example I can only enter the EU (excluding Ireland) before the 10 year anniversary of me acquiring the passport which is Dec ‘25 even though it says it’s valid until Jul ‘26.

You do need to be careful about having residual validity just to confuse things slightly. You’re supposed to have 3 months validity beyond your intended date of return I believe but that’s quite a common thing with other countries anyway. I guess it’s why so many of us used to renew our passports 6-9 months early.

I had no idea about this, thanks for posting. My passport was issued February 2015 but expires in August 2025 so it could have caught me out.

That would have caught me out too. I was aware that some countries require you to have at least six months left on your passport, but not that they won't accept one that's more than ten years from the issue date. It would never have crossed my mind to think about this. The passport office aren't really helping matters by issuing passports that last more than ten years from the issue date if some countries won't accept them beyond the ten year mark.
