I’m off to Italy late Aug and I’ve always wanted to drive one of the passes but I’m tight on time, have to be in Lake Garda on the Monday and could leave the UK as early as Fri night but most likely Sat morning. Not interested in the Stelvio, heard too many negative stories but quite taken with the Furka but in truth I don’t really know which is best in terms of driving pleasure and views.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers all.

The 3-in-1 solution is to leave the A2 at Andermatt - Furka Pass - into Grimsel Pass but turn around after the Grimsel See - then B19 southwards - after Obergoms turn east towards the Nufenen Pass - at the end you are at Airolo on the A2 again and continue towards Lake Garda.

Easy.

If you are still bored there is the San Gottardo back from Airolo towards Andermatt.

Cheers, will check it out. I know quite a few people on here know the Passes well, hoping they’ll chip in.

I would tend to agree with chalda. Furka > Grimsel > Nufenen is a great run. However, my favourites (by some margin) are the Sustenpass and the Ofenpass.

Having just got back from our "annual" road trip I was once again reminded how great these two roads are after a couple of years off.

Gotta agree with Furka, Grimsel, Susten, St Gottard (old pass), Nufenen and would also add Splugen Pass followed by San Bernardino.

Forgetting the Stelvio, my least favourite of those above is the Furka. The rest are nicer to drive imv.
There's a number of passes in the Dolomites above Garda which are spectacular.

Oh really, which ones? If I can get some decent drives in whilst in Lake Garda - billy bonus.

To be honest, you won't regret any of the passes.

Yeah, fair one. Just trying to work out which ones are the ‘best’ in the short time I have.

Almost anywhere between Bolzano and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Passo di Giau, Passo Falzerago, Passo Pordoi, plus many others.

Couldn't see the videos? Saw the phots but no videos unfortunately frown

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, much appreciated. Plan so far is drive on Sat to Baden Baden and stopping overnight. On the Sunday I'll initially take the Route 500 down to Freudenstadt and then onto Wassen for an overnight stay. We should get to Wassen reasonably early so will have a bash at the Susten Pass in the late afternoon/evening.

On the Sunday we'll do chalda's route before hoofing it down to Lake Garda so thanks again, cracking suggestion. Might try and do the Gottard on the way back but we'll see.

Nice one about the camera, thanks. Mind if I ask which hotels you stayed in? We found a really nice one in Baden Baden but they charge for parking which just annoyed me as by the time we'd factored in the hounds that would be €100 just to park and for the mutts. Pfft, I don't mind depending money but nah, I'd rather spend that on wursts and bier.

Whilst you are driving the 500 from Baden Baden call in and do a toboggan run, hands down more fun than any of the passes.
I did the Andermatt loop last week...set off at 6am and all were empty till getting on for 10.30 when motor cyclists, pushbikes and motorhomes appeared.
