Boston, Cape Cod, Martha, etc, etc
Discussion
So...by random accident and chance it looks like this yr we will be getting away to Boston in the Fall. Well September anyway, which I count as autumn even if the Yanks insist on it being October. Anyway, it should still be warm enough in Sept to be nice.
This is something we have wanted to do for a while, so it looks like being 10days in and out of Boston and wifey wants us to grab a motor and have a look round the place.
Recommendations please? Is it worth staying on Marthas for instance? Is it just a drive by, oh look pretty house, blah blah place? Is Cape Cod nice to visit? Is Providence nice or just a State capital that isnt worth it? etc, etc...

We went to Boston a couple of years ago and loved it. One of the few places I have left saying "I want to come back"
Fenway Park was interesting .... baseball itself - very dull. If you want sport, watch a Celtics game at TD Garden.
Find a good walking tour of the city, there's some amazing history there.
Whale watching is amazing (we went out with Hyannis Whalke Watcher Cruises).
Salem is over-commercialised (and isn't actually Salem) The Salem Witch Museum was terrible and not worth the money.
Lots of little towns that are worth a look, having a car is essential. We loved Newburyport. Would go inland and explore if we went back
Food everywhere is plentiful and good quality.
Logan Airport has the most consistently unfriendly staff I have encountered just about anywhere - customs, baggage, shops, car rental - all rude and unhelpful in a very non-American way. Everywhere else was the opposite.
Regina Pizzeria in Boston is excellent but you will have to queue to get in. The waterfront is a beautiful place to chill.
I'm jealous!

Really depends on what you like doing and how far your want to drive. This is something we have wanted to do for a while, so it looks like being 10days in and out of Boston and wifey wants us to grab a motor and have a look round the place.

I can recommend the White Mountains area - I would have loved to have seen them in the fall - White Mountain Hotel was very nice, albeit back in 2000.
Can’t speak for Providence but Cape Cod is also worth it - Martha’s Vineyard is a ferry trip across.
Newport would be a better call.
Boston is a lovely city, very walkable.
Provincetown is hilarious, depending on your tolerance levels. It's a little while since we visited, so I can imagine it's only got better/worse in the intervening years, given the recent mass acceptance of our Rainbow-wearing brethren. It's Pride-central. It didn't help that it was Bear-week when we were there. Me being large and bearded ensured I got a fair bit of attention, as well as a few propositions. Mrs. Tuono was highly amused.
If you go, visit the library; it has a massive, full-sized sailing ship inside. However, the most memorable sights are generally walking the streets.

Er, I don’t know what bear week is, but I’m too large - or fat as my wife calls it - with a beard, so I’ll avoid that thanks.
Newburyport & Rockport are lined up for a day as can combine with a drive out via Salem and stay over somewhere.
Nantucket is on the list, is it worth staying out there for an evening or just a fly by day visit?
Recommended hotels in Boston pls?

I was quite disappointed with Marthas vineyard, the centre is one big trailer park which contrasts massively with the nice properties at the water’s edge - but no one is going to invite you in.
Boston is a nice city and definitely somewhere you would want to return to. Lobster and chips is a cheap meal. Newport RI is another place to return to. Just driving along the coast there are great little towns to just pull-over for a coffee, or a Chowder.
We drove up to Vermont and were disapointed.

I was confusing my Providence/Provincetown. Providence is Rhode Island, Provincetown is Cape Cod. I didn't know what Bear week was either. I now feel that I'd have been just as happy in my life for remaining ignorant...we'll not be returning! And it looks like you've missed this years event.Newburyport & Rockport are lined up for a day as can combine with a drive out via Salem and stay over somewhere.

For hotels in Boston, The Marriot on Long Wharf was good, as far as big chain hotels go, but we've also stayed at Copley House on Back Bay and would go there again.
And my wife mistakes 'large' for 'fat' too...
