Hi all. Currently in the US.
UK citizen, UK licence.
Somebody has offered for me to drive their car
How do I sort the insurance for this as it is private and not via a rental firm?
Is there a way to insure myself 'on anything' for a day?
When I get the chance I'll check with my travel insurance but I doubt that will cover it.

Thanks in advance.

Your Travel Insurance won't cover you legally or otherwise driving.
I would guess the best and easiest way to get Insurance here is for the person who owns the car and has offered it to you to add you on his policy albeit temporarily.

Get them to ring their insurance broker, adding an extra driver is a lot easier over there then it is here. My Dad just rang his broker when i used his car once, they just confirmed i'd be covered, no extra charges or anything

US insurance can typically allow foreign licensed family members to drive but not other people with foreign licences. i.e. family only.

No problem - just have the car's owner call the insurance company and add you - I've done it lots of times for family visitors.

Thanks will try that avenue. The car belongs to a firm rather than an individual - hopefully can clear it all up OK.
I (perhaps naively) thought insurance 'follows the car' in the US. Is this the case?

Cheers

If owned by a firm then that might make it even easier providing the firms policy covers any driver etc - but your friend is the one that needs to arrange/ check this.
