Never been anywhere in October before but we are considering it as a family for some autumnal sun.

The idea is to stay in Europe as it'll only be for a week. Not interested in Egypt. Front runners are Cyprus and Kos at the minute but welcome to hear people's views on those who might regularly holiday in October.

I know daytime temps should be good enough to be active but enjoy some lovely weather but is it pretty chilly at night?

Kos will certainly be on the turn by then.

I would recommend Portugal, i went in may and the people I got speaking too said it’s never colder than about 20 on the algarve all year round, it can rain though.

Cape Verde - a little further a field but warmer. (6 hour flight)

Cyprus or the canaries are warm all year too

Not sure if it was 'normal' weather for the time of year, but we had 7 days of shorts and t-shirt weather in Italy the last week of October before COVID struck. Stayed in Florence and went on trips to Rome and Venice and it was mid 20 degrees and wall to wall sunshine. Bit chilly in the evenings and early morning

Would probably go for the Canaries myself rather than Cyprus.

Maybe think about southern Spain as well.

Don’t flame me for it but have been to Benidorm at October half term and always had great weather. Stay well away from the madness and it is fine.

We stay at Finestrat end of the Playa de Poniente

Crete is good. We were there in October last year and will be going again this year (end of September beginning of October).

Canaries are the safe choice.

You might get lucky with the weather somewhere in the southern Med. in October but you might not. Not a risk I'd be taking when another couple of hours flying will get you there.

For the last few times weve been holiday either the last week if Sept or first week of Oct as my OH has fixed holidays and it's outside school hols, but still decent weather.

We've had luck so far with weather and been to (pre covid):

Malta (would highly recommend and want to go back)
Lisbon
Barcelona

If you do go to Malta in mid Oct try to get to the Mdina GP - classics razzed around the narrow twisties of the countryside in and around Mdina. Probably the nicest and most open motorsport event I've been to and my wife loved it too! Potter around the pits, all the drivers really open and nice to see and chat to everyone.

We went to Kos as a family of 4 during October Half Term. Got a cracking deal that time of year and the temp during the day was around 24C evenings around 10-12C - Not dissimilar to a UK summer holiday IMHO. Pools were abit cold but the sea was lovely and warm as had been heated up all year.
Booked Crete for this years October half term - again another bargain.

Crete last year was much warmer in the evening 20-22C and as you say the sea is unbelievably warm (more so than mid summer).

Always go away In early October. Booked a week in Majorca for this October. Normally around 20-25c there. Also done Algarve and mainland Spain at the same temps.

Always do a week all inclusive as well.

Definitely Eastern Med. I've been to Cyprus in November and it was T-shirt weather, but you need a jumper in the evening.

I’ve been to Crete and paphos in October half term, Rhodes also, all were beautiful and think we’re going to Rhodes again this October. Canaries also worth a look.

We go to Turkey every half term.

Flight is not much longer than Canaries/Cyprus, weather 25/26 ish, decent prices and lots of choice.

Sea warm, great for snorkelling and lots of genuine fakes on offer in the markets smile

Have also done Tenerife and weather similar but was pretty windy where we were.

We've been to Italy twice in October (2015 & 2018) and had daytime temps in the 30's (Pompeii was over 40!). Deliberately went later in the year as my OH doesn't like it too warm.

I'm looking at half term so it'll be late October. 25 degrees is perfect weather for me, enough to sunbathe but cool enough to get out and about too. I become less inclined to move about as much when the temps push way over 30!

Must be a human thing, as we were just at friends' house in the west of France at 34C and their tortoise was racing round the garden like a fking rocket.
