Hi all,

I've been through many of the relevant discussions but can't really find the advice I'm looking for, so I'd be grateful for views from anybody with experience of Turkey. My wife & I are looking to travel to Istanbul for a few days in mid September to see the sights, and want to then move on to the coast somewhere for 3 or 4 more nights to relax before flying home. We're not into large resort type places, much prefer small hotels, quieter places. Maybe with some good walking / hiking, but not necessary.

I think that rules out the larger places like Bodrum, Antalya, Marmaris? But maybe means somewhere like Kalkan would be better? Any recommendations? The wild card is Capadoccia as it doesn't need to be the beach, just somewhere to relax. Or even a gulet cruise?

Grateful for any recommendations!

Capadocia is an amazing place - slightly to the West there are some old cities dug into the rock that you (used to be able) to walk around, which was pretty special. Bloody hot though.

There is also places at (old Roman library) at Ephusus, and the rock lilly pads in Pamukkale (though I understand there's not much water in them now).

You just gotta go and see some of the coast though surely? There's lots of it, and it will be quiet in September, with the water temperature at it's peak.

Or what about going to one of the nearby Greek islands?

Dalyan might be worth a look.

I've been to Alanya 15 times and it is a beautiful place. It is about a 2hr taxi ride east from Antalya airport on the south coast, don't get a bus transfer as it would take a fair bit longer.

There are long stretches of beach separated by the old castle on a peninsula which also has a harbour on the east side. There are a fair few bars and restaurants on that side. We spent most of our time on the eastern beaches, some of which are stoney but it gets sandy the nearer you go to the harbour.

Early September is a really good time to go as it's not peak high temperatures but it is getting to the end of their holiday season and not as many tourists then.

You can walk around the old ship yard at the harbour and up around the castle, the views are spectacular.
