We have just been asked to pay an additional £50 as we have changed our NA MX5 for a 986 Boxster. We have changed cars in the past no problem but we are now being told this is a 'new' system and longer cars cost more. Has anyone else had this issues as there is no information when booking to say longer cars are more expensive?

Seems they do charge different prices for different cars which I didn’t know. Just tried a generic booking for a Boxster and then an MX-5 and the Boxster was £10 each way more expensive. 7 series a few more quid on top,

They must put them into generic size categories.

We booked 10 weeks ago. They seem to be splitting the difference between current prices and original booking prices. They want £21 extra out and £38 extra return. £59 in total. On the phone they told us they had sizes L1, L2. L3 etc. but there is nothing on their website to explain this or the additional pricing policy and how its derived, it appears to be conjured from thin air.

Each carriage has a certain capacity, therefore larger vehicles that take up more space are reasonably charged a higher price.

Boxster may be designated as a wide vehicle and therefore placed into the high/wide/large vehicle train?

Just had a look.

It's even more sinister than that. The following are all the same date and time of travel. I even went back to the Fiat 500 at the end to confirm it isn't space allocation driving the price up

When buying a ticket with the Aston Martin Vantage, you don't get the opportunity to purchase the "Short Stay Saver" ticket!!

A Fiat 500

BMW 3 Series

Isuzu Trooper

Aston Martin Vantage

Open https://www.eurotunnel.com/uk/tickets-and-fares/

Scroll down to the "Important Eurotunnel Ticket Information" at the bottom.

Note that: "Our prices are indicative and based on a number of factors, including the ticket type, travel dates and time, length and height of your vehicle and accessories."

Also https://help.eurotunnel.com/hc/en-gb/articles/3600...

There might not be anything on their site which explains specifically what the L1, L2 etc. categories mean (unless that's tucked away somewhere less obvious than the above links), but it's certainly clear enough that prices will change based on vehicle size...

Does it say anything about vehicle brand? laugh

Pretty sure a Vantage is smaller than a Isuzu Trooper.

Pretty standard - in a train that can only carry a certain total length of vehicles it makes sense to charge those that that up more room more money. smile

DFDS ferries do the same.

Was that a fully scientific test? Or was the Aston Martin the 4th quote you got from the same I.P. Address without clearing cookies?

Either way, it's an interesting find.

As I said, I went back and put the 500s details back in again after completing the 4 quotes.

Are you saying that if you work for a large company and you book tickets online while at work, that you might be paying a higher price because your colleagues have already searched for quotes/booked tickets?

Interesting and similar to my experience recently. I am on one PC booking my R8 and my lad is on another PC booking his M2 for this weeks jolly to the ring. Obviously want to be on the same crossings. Now I would have thought that would be easy, oh no rolleyes
Every search was giving not only significantly different prices but different availability as well! Got there in the end by booking both cars as wide vehicles, even so the R8 was more expensive than the M2 furious
When did life get this annoying?

I dont want to derail the thread , but here goes
Dodd had a garage in Knockholt/Farnborough Kent and I saw him and the car a few times there , many years ago , it speciliased in auto gear boxes , the tag line was " the secret of shiiiffft "
I booked him to pick my car with failed (as it turned out ) torque converter he never showed , and denied the bookingwas ever made .
The car used to have a RR grill with flying lady, RR forced him to remove it

The ferries charge by size too. Cars longer than 5m pay extra such as 7 series (twice had to pay this for my 7's)
Recently took my Vanquish S and sent email asking that I be put on a level deck as poor ground clearance would risking beaching or splitter damage if any ramps over 7.5°.
DFDS were very helpful said they had amended my booking to note this and I would probably be loaded with the lorries as they obvs can't do steep ramps either.
As it happens was boarded with the very first cars on both crossings which kept me on the main deck and right at front of the boat so no problems.
NO Aston tax either
