We usually - before 2020 - used to go to SA, specifically Kruger at the end of May.
Almost always using BA holidays with car hire.

Looking at October the prices are hugely different, flights are ok but the car hire portion seems very expensive to me.

Any tips for car hire companies apart from the usual?

TIA.

Hey op, im off to CapeTown with the family in August. The prices are a pisstake at the moment. triple what it was for a Ford Fiesta last time I visited (2019)
hire through the BA app when you book your flight will reduce it quite a bit, plus if you go with Avis you'll get a second driver on the policy. A common scam is to charge you for fuel at return so make sure that you tell the staff that its full. Also stay away from the unknown hirers, terrible reviews.

Its been years since I hired cars in South Africa. Recently in other locations I`ve been using https://www.rentalcars.com/ with out any problems.
I`ve just checked them, 7 days hire of a small car from Cape Town airport, FULLY insured £175. Any good?

I use arguscarhire and then pick a supplier I trust. ZA car hire used to be dirt cheap, I think we paid something stupid like £11/day last time we were there but alas covid/supply chain nonsense has seen that rise quite substantially, £40 per day seems normal now which isn’t really that outlandish when you think about it. I’ve got two cars booked for January/February next year and keeping an eye on prices, I’ve noticed that prices tend to creep up and then plummet nearer the time

Need an SUV size and from Johannesburg so Cape Town no good.
I’ll have a look at Argus now.

Make sure whoever you use you take a look at Quidco to see if you can get an extra few percent off/back.
