There has been a lot of discussion on the price of crossing the Channel.
I came across this article in Motor of 1 February 1986, some 36 years ago. Back then, we would have been looking at £90-£100 each way (more if you had a shed dragging affliction). I think in real terms the cost has come down substantially, no doubt someone will pop in and say what the current equivalents of these prices are.
The nostalgic amongst us will note the variety of routes and carriers.

Fortunately the cars we can buy have also changed - the same issue has a road test of the Nissan Laurel 2.4SGLi costing over £10k...

I'm sure I paid a lot less than those prices as in £29 each way Dover - Calais.

Portsmouth st malo approx £150 in 1986 equates to just over £400 today, which is what Brittany ferries are currently quoting one way. It only costs £260 to come back!

The easiest way to get cheap fares in those days was to buy a couple of newspaper day trip special offers & rip up the outbound ticket to get home. I did this many times. Strictly against the terms of the offers but without computers they couldn't check if you had used both legs of a ticket.

I remember not long after Eurotunnel opened (1994?), I used to travel on evening daytrips with (the future) Mrs V. after 6pm and back before 6am for £7 return. We used to drive to Boulogne, Le Touquet, Etaple, Montreuil etc for dinner and drive back on around the midnight to 1am train with about 4 other vehicles on.

Yep - I did that too. I took my car on the hovercraft and it was pretty cheap.

hehe

I do wonder if there'll be a return to cheaper fares if demand slackens (though obviously with the cost of petrol/electricity rocketing, probably not)

P&O is down to around £69 for a day return, the tunnel was over £400 for the same day when I looked. I sat looking over the tunnel in half term a few weeks ago, mid afternoon train came in, around 12-15 days got off and about he same got on. If it was £60 for a day trip id have been one of those passengers. I refuse to pay the stupid prices.
