Morning all,

With all the chaos in the travel industry we're postponing going abroad for another year.

Kids (9 & 11) really want to go to Alton towers, but it's not somewhere I've been before or familiar with the area (live in NE Scotland).

We're thinking of 4 or 5 nights away at the beginning of July. Where would be a good place to base ourselves for the week? What else is there to do in the area (prepared to travel each day). Ideally a hotel with large family rooms with two king\double beds.

Oh and is one day enough at Alton towers?

Appreciate your input.

You could consider basing yourself somewhere around Birmingham and seeing what’s on over the summer at the NEC/NIA around the time you’re thinking of going.

The space centre at Leicester is a great day out, possible to include racing at Donnington or Mallory Park or a trip to Caffeine and Machine?

[ETA] Alton Towers is doable in a day if you have fast passes. Otherwise you’re looking at around 4-5 rides max.

I'll also throw in an another alternate option of having the Peak District as your base.

We've headed down from Scotland on this holiday three times now and will continue with it as the area offers so many things for so many different ages (6, 4 and 1 right now).

We get a cottage in Great Longstone which is next to Bakewell, there are great restaurants/pubs in the area and we also pickup supplies at an excellent butcher in Bakewell and also the estate shop at Chatsworth house, which sorts quite a few meals. Most visits are about a week and cover:

Various cave tours
Heights of Abraham
Chatsworth House gardens and farm park with large wooden play area
Bakewell shoping/consumption of bakewell puddings which beat the tart hands down
Monsal Trail cycling and walking
50mins drive to Alton Towers/Cbeebies
1hr20 drive to Drayton Manor/Thomas Land

A great area and constantly things to do. We manage to get a lot done 'rope dropping' the parks and it's nice to get back to the cottage after a hectic day in the park. If that sounds of interest I can give more specifics.

I live near uttoxeter which is near Alton towers.

Depends what you want to do really, there are quite a few things to do around.

I think at busy times you need two days, you end up queuing a lot.

There is the water park at Alton towers as well.

There is Cannock chase you can hire bikes. JCB has a shop and you can walk around grounds and lakes if your kids like JCBs that is.

Depends what you like to do there is an adventure centre near uttoxeter, and Go ape at Cannock chase.

There is shopping centre at Cannock with haribo store and usual stuff.

You could always stay a night or two at Alton Towers. Not the best hotels to be fair but ok for kids.

We’ve done two days at AT even when quiet - it was great to just thrash around lots of rides both days, though we were pretty wrecked by the end of the second day. You could spend another day there in Splash Landings.

We did one double day staying at the AT Hotel, and another at a nearby Travelodge (Uttoxeter I think, but years back). I liked the food buffet at AT, but not a cheap stay.

Thanks for the input everyone, really looking forward to the trip. Appears to be loads to do down there.

Ended up booking 5 nights Derby Mickleover hotel as they have a pool and more importantly can offer a king size bed and twin beds for the kids. Reasonably priced as anything is just now.

Quick question, is the Alton towers waterpark more a morning or afternoon visit than all day I assume? Will plan for 1.5 days at Alton towers and 0.5 day at the water park. That leaves us with 2 other full days free.

Morning for the water park. If you do it the other way round, they’ll be too physically tired to enjoy the water, as the coasters and the walking/queueing take it out of you. You also avoid the early gate rush for the actual park, which can be mental at 10am.
