Question for the well versed London folk, I plan on taking the misses and daughter (6) to London for a few days soon, we went a few months back and stayed in the holiday inn at Whitechapel, which was nice but a bit of a trek to get onto the tube and into London

Does anyone know of any cheaper hotels with a tube station in close walking distance that has good links into London?

I did see the premier inn at tower bridge mentioned when I searched piston heads but I’m unsure how well it’s connected

Anyone had a mini break in the same circumstances and care to offer up some advice?

Premier inns... One at Waterloo. One at Blackfriars. Both near stations and easy to get to a couple of nice places. Waterloo one has no restaurant at the minute though. Either of those there is some nice places to walk to that are close for a bite to eat

Where are you coming in from & where do you need / want to go ?

I'm a bit of a Premier Inn fan - and there's usually one not too far from the main stations. Otherwise, try any of the websites for deals, last minute, hotels.com etc.

Very well. Tower Hill station on the Circle & District Line, Tower Gateway Station on the DLR are both right next to it. Then a 5 min walk up Minories brings you to Aldgate Station and the Met Line. Plus buses galore to various places.

We've stayed at the Holborn one a couple of times. 5 minutes walk to Holborn Underground station, 10 minutes to Covent Garden etc.

There's a nice cafe just over the road for breakfast.

I stayed at the Stratford one recently, right on top of westfield shopping centre, olympic park, tube & train station etc.
Massive place

I used the Premier Inn at Kings Cross recently and it was the perfect location for us - both for getting around the city itself and out to the Alexandra Palace (plus getting to London from home & back). It’s a stones throw from the station.

Pre covid I worked in London for a while and tried several Premier Inns, my go to one was Archway. It was fairly new, restaurant was good, above Archway tube station, a few stops from Camden Town, Euston, etc. It had a McDonalds next door and various other shops.

London Bridge wasn’t bad but a fair walk from the tube.

Steer clear of Hampstead, worse one I’ve ever stayed in.

I've too stayed at the Premier Inn at KC a couple of times as well as the one near Blackfriars bridge. Both were fine as a base.

I've also stayed at the Leonardo Royal London St Paul's over a weekend, and assuming you can get good room rates, this is quite well positioned. This was a work stay, and at the time ( a few years ago) was cheaper on the weekend than Premier Inn. https://www.leonardo-hotels.com/london/leonardo-ro... - just checked now and they're quite pricey !

Kings Cross a good shout for a base these days. Lots to see there now they have redeveloped it.

For a Slightly left field sarf of the river option, there is a Travelodge in Vauxhall we have used for friends and rellies a few times. It is what it is, pretty basic but perfectly OK place to spend the night.

There are a couple of decent places to eat round there - Stockwelll Continental, Canton Arms - and a 5min walk gets you to the Victoria Line and up to the west end in less than 10mins. Northern Line at Stockwell is 10min walk in the other direction for the City and N London.

Or you can walk over the bridge and up into Chelsea in 30 mins.or so. Or get the bus, depending on how much walking your daughter likes to do. Or head down the riverside Thames path in either direction.

Whatever you do, enjoy your time together. They grow up fast! Mine is doing her A levels, only seems like 5mins since her first day at achool;)

Have used the Travelodge in Covent Garden many times (booked again for July). Looks a bit grey tower block from the outside but if you book one of the 'super rooms' they have always been perfectly fine for the price, assuming you are like us and really only look for somewhere clean with a decent bed and shower when in London.

I was going to suggest that too. Not stayed there and looks a bit grim from the outside - but just a short walk to the Piazza.

Before these budget chains the Strand Palace used to be the cheap option for a hotel in London. Not sure how cheap now though!

This.

London is covered in Premier Inns, Travelodge, IBIS, EasyHotel, etc.

Just go on google maps, and see which ones are either walking distance to what you want to see, or where you want to be, or if they are a short walk to a tube stop. You can easily check how long the tube ride is from the hotel to the centre, the attractions etc.

We did this last weekend with the kids for a few days. We come in to Paddington so use the Premier Inn at Paddington because then luggage can be dropped off straight off the train and not having to take a case on the Tube is a massive plus!

If you're coming into Paddington I'd recommend that Premier Inn if not go for something near your station.

We took the tube quite a bit but frankly it's quick, costs are capped at £7.70 (Zone 1) per adult per day and the kids (5 and 9) loved using it!

I've also stayed at the Travel Lodge at Vauxhall for work and I was pleasantly surprised by it, room was perfectly comfortable, the food was fine and very good access to the tube station.

Would use again.

I'm staying at the Travelodge Euston next week for work.

I'm not sure if it's our Corporate Travel Booking system but I struggled to find a room under our daily £200 allowance. Prices seem to have gone up massively.

I found they varied a lot, some in need of a bloody good refurb. It was the breakfast that made me wonder, it’s all the same food, same supplier but the quality varied massively.

Don’t get me wrong, none were bad, just some better than others. Apart from Hampstead, that was crap, a CRT tv and a plug in oil radiator in the room because the hotel heating had broken down.
