Moving to Greece and taking the 911
Discussion
My job is moving to Greece in the next few months and I’m thinking about taking my UK 911 out with me. I don’t plan to register it in Greece as this would attract an additionally crazy car tax. But I do need to get it there (and back)…. I would be very interested in hearing about experiences of driving or shipping cars to and from the UK to Greece (or nearby) please. Any advice, things to think about would be most welcome, (I don’t plan to drive it in Greece. Just store it then use it in Europe, Italy, Bosnia etc).
With Brexit, are there issues moving a car via France, Germany etc for more than 6 months at a time? Did you ship a car or drive and ferry? What route would you recommend?
Thanks very much for your advice in advance.

Its a looooooooooong drive. I drove there a few years ago, maybe 5-6. We live near Ramsgate and ended up in Alexdroupoli in northern Greece. It took us around 2.5 days. Worth it as saved massive amounts on airfares and got to see places in Europe that we wouldn't normally see. A few borders had long wait times and all the car documents needed to be seen, reg document mot and insurance.
Originally coming from Greece here’s my 2 cents – it is a long drive, but you can make a very nice and scenic drive out of it. The most common route is through France, Switzerland and get a ferry from Ancona.
As long as you drive the car out of the country every 6 months you will be fine, even though many cars with foreign plates (UK, German, Swedish etc.) tend to overstay… As long as you’re not attracting attention the police will not bother you.
If you’re moving to Athens, I would definitely recommend sorting out a garage as a 911 with UK plates will attract attention in the wrong neighborhood.
No issues with Brexit as far as I’m aware apart from the usual 6 month rule.
Don’t discard Greek roads for some awesome drives – many quiet twisty mountain roads that will take your breath away!

If you plan to keep the car in Greece for over 180 days you have to re register it in Greece, and pay the duties. Plus your current Insurance co may well not insure it for longer than that anyway. Theft etc not covered.
These rules have been in Europe and UK for longer than brexit.
Of course you could wing it. I'm in France and have had to re register mine.
The other issue that can be a pain is you are supposed to get a European Driving Licence if you plan to be resident, or even they deem you to be.
If you get stopped in a Police check there may well be an issue.
Some chance it, some don't.
Good luck!
