I'm off to Sofia in 3 weeks and looking for recommendations for places to visit/eat, and places to avoid.

I used to work/live in Sofia for a time, but not been back for around 8 years. Izbata Tavern was good for traditional Bulgarian dishes - try the Kavarma with a Schumensko beer. There used to be a good restaurant called The Olive Garden and a good Greek place just off Vitosha Boulevard - hopefully they’re still going. JJ Murphys was a busy bar that always showed the football games from around Europe/the UK if that’s your kind of thing. Cafe Memento was good for coffee, wine & pastries etc with a really good atmosphere day or night.

The only thing I would say you must avoid is getting into an unlicensed taxi - OK Supertrans are the main company in the city (and always safe to use), but I’m sure Uber will be prevalent now. Just make sure the meter is switched on as soon as you get in and/or agree a price.

Common sense prevails as in any city - don’t get into trouble because there’s a good chance the police will not be on your side - regardless of what has happened. You might see a few blacked out Merc’s & Audi’s floating around - these are usually the local gangsters, so best to give them a wide berth. You also might get approached by hookers & beggars late at night so just be polite but firm. In saying all that, it’s generally a good, safe city if a little on the quiet side for my liking - but that might have changed.

I’ve never been anywhere else that gets so cold in the winter yet so bloody hot in the summer. It’s bizarre.
