As per the title, in the lakes from next Sunday for a 5 days with the family inc 3 kids 10, 13,15 and dog. Staying near to Kendal but can travel all over Any recommendations on good stuff to do? The obvious thing of walking we'll do (until the kids moan too much !) but also fancy some other activities, or just great places to see...Any ideas or experience welcomed...

Coniston Water and the grave of Donald Campbell. Also of course, The Ruskin Museum. All easy stroll around. Take a boat on the water too.

We just got back, what an amazing place. As this is Pistonheads I won’t recommend the walks but suggest you drive Hard Knott pass - what an experience! Roman fort there too if you’re interested.

No affiliation. But we did this last time we were in the lakes. It was properly fun. Hired a Land Rover and followed the directions given. Mix of on road and green lanes. Brilliant fun. And a very nice pub lunch on route.

Thanks for this, looks great. Has got me thinking about whether I could just find some green lanes anyway as we’re going in the Discovery. But, I’ll take at look at this as well. Thanks.

Is the sculpture trail still in Grizedale forest? I imagine kids would enjoy that!

No problem at all. What I would say is, although it does look quite expensive and you could of course go it alone. The route these guys had was fantastic. And took in some great views. As I said had a lovely pub for lunch on route ( not included in price of course. It’s up to you whether you stop off there). A bit where you stop off and climb to the peak of a hill overlooking lake Windermere. It’s a the route you are paying for. And b the use of their vehicles.

I wouldn’t be happy taking my own car down some of them. Very overgrown but you just kinda push through with the Landy. Depends how much you value your paintwork I guess.

Other thing to do in Windermere of course is hire one of the electric boats for a few hours. Get in early though. The place gets crazy busy!

The pencil museum is real.
As is the L+H museum. Since Stan was born there.

Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway is good, as is the Bassenthwaite station cafe (you eat in a train carriage).

Depending if you’re into walking there’s plenty of hills obviously, from a couple of hours to all day jobs.

Another vote here for the motor museum.

Also if you go down to Ullswater just past glenridding you can rent a little motor boat, or catch the steamer.

Whinlatter forest is good if you’ve got a bike or you can rent one, lots of forest trails.

Lakes Distillery near Bassenthwaite does a tour/tasting session and the cafe is decent too.

And this is a bit of an outlier but if you like cheese you can drive down past Kirkby Stephen down into North Yorkshire to the Hawes creamery.
