We've been invited to a wedding in Shetland. I checked out the prices - return tickets for me and Mrs M from Edinburgh to Shetland come in at a eye-watering £785 yikesweeping A 90 minute non stop flight. Credit card duly melted!

We could fly to Paris cheaper...

You are making the mistake of assuming flight prices are logical & related to distance travelled.

Expensive yes, but the only other option is to play ferry roulette, which is ideal if you want a reason not to attend the wedding.

You could probably find and charter a private pilot in a small Cessna or similar for considerably less than that.

I’d be surprised.

6 hours plane and pilot and plane rental would probably be about that, surely?

Matchmaker…we can beat that (unfortunately).
£450 for us to fly from Exeter to Jersey. 40mins flight, 45 if someone farts the wrong way.

It’s £800 return if you want to fly to St Marys on the Scilly Isles.

Maybe you should? I think when I was going from London to Edinburgh, the cheapest flight was via a stop off in Amsterdam lol

Why not fly from Aberdeen, it’s usually the lowest cost way to do it?

Charter a private pilot…How does that work?

I have booked for four people Gatwick to Jersey return EasyJet in July for a total of £780. We were surprised at the cost.

It's supposedly a 1 hour flight but I expect it to be somewhat less.

This.

Quick check for flights shows its around £225 per person return, for a flight in early July.

Go to any private airfield and speak to any number of the people there - I did it before I did my JAR-PPL for a flight to Norwich. Cost me pretty much just fuel and a weekends beer money and the guy was happy to have some company while he got some additional hours in. It was his plane and was a basic little single prop so not the most luxurious or fastest but was good fun!

Isn't this what happened to Emiliano Sala? Some bloke will do it on the cheap. No licence and it's got cloudy and now we've crashed.

No idea, I don’t know who that is - possibly I guess from the limited info above - but it’s pretty common for private pilots to get their hours upped this way.

I used the same guy to/from Norfolk for months (until I could do it myself) without any issues at all - and it was infinitely more pleasant than 3 trains or a 5hr (minimum) car ride.

To be fair, the Sala crash turned out to be nothing to do with pilot competence.
