Is this doable? My wife has never visited Scotland. Was thinking Edinburgh and Glen Coe. Driving up from Buckinghamshire. Mid-July.

Thanks in advance for all advice. smile

Certainly doable for Edinburgh. Depends what you hope to then cover in the (much further) Highlands. It's such a lovely area that it deserves much longer, but a first visit will always encourage a return.

I did the "NC500" last year from Bucks, West coast is lovely, East coast bit boring. If I do it again going to focus on the West coast and Skye.

Yes, west coast is better. Skye too commercialised these days, need to go further north.

I'd say that it's plenty. I did a couple of nights in Edinburgh, then across west to Loch Awe, down the coast, Oban then towards Mull of Kintyre a few years back, simply as it was part of Scotland i'd not seen. Great roadtrip.

I think that just 5 days away left us feeling like we'd covered loads. Love following the coast back from M of K to Inverrary, then back over the Rest and be thankful.

If I could ever do one walk again in Scotland it would be Glen Nevis and the Steall falls. Ignore Ben Nevis and drive further up the Glen which is stunningly beautiful and do the walk from the car park at the end of the glen to the falls. Reasonably good path. Good walking shoes etc but not mountain terrain.

I’m sure there are thousands of other walks you could do but that was a memorable one for us.

You can spend years in Scotland and not see it all, so depends what you want to do.

From Bucks it's a day driving there and back, so you're down to 5 days - one night in Edinburgh and a very quick trip round the NC500 will give you an idea, but really it's just scratching the surface.

You would probably be better splitting it up a bit, so spend a week doing the Central Belt (Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling) and another week in the Highlands. You could easily spend a 3rd week in the Lowlands and Northern England too.

If you are thinking of July this year, check what accommodation is available prior to deciding any route - this late in the day you will find that many places outwith the big cities and towns will be booked up and anything that is available might be very pricey or the dross that nobody wants.

That might dictate your route and where you can stop off to a degree.
