Me and Mrs PR have arranged a dog sitter so we we can have a rare non doggy outing together.

Oxford (not been for 40yrs) is the target, where to park? (I'd rather not use a park and ride unless we have to)
Ashmoleun Musuem is on the list, since restrictions have lifted is weekday prebooking really necessary?

Where for light lunch and a drink? Hoping for nice weather so outside if possible.

Wander by the river of course, no punting but what what else to do?

Oxford is anti-car, you’ll have to get a park and ride ( which are pretty good to be fair)

There's parking on Longwall Street.

It's pay & display, can't remember how much or how long, but it's the perfect location to then stroll down the High Street.

Lunch in the Turf Tavern everytime.

We usually park at the West Gate shopping centre. I like the natural history museum. The building itself is amazing.

If you're going to the Ashmolean, then have lunch at their rooftop restaurant, which is pretty good. There's also a range of restaurants with outside seating on top of the Westgate Centre too.

Agree with comments re parking - just don't, other than P&R, you might be lucky, but mostly you won't - or get the train in from somewhere local to you and wander into town.

If you like coffee and cake then Barefoot in Jericho is fantastic. To get there you can walk out of the city centre along Walton Street and past the newly developed Radcliffe Infirmary area - now part of Oxford University and well worth a look around.

I have never had an issue parking in Oxford on a weekend over the last 5yrs. West Gate or one of the nearby car parks.

Thank you everyone.

A successful outing, lovely lunch @ Quod. Used the park and ride but couldn't work out how to buy the £6.80 (parking + bus) family ticket.

There's only one machine at the Oxford Parkway (train/P&R site) bus stop area that dispenses them - it's almost as if they want you to pay more...

Another fan of Quod here.
Usually is Westgate. The P&R is just not worth the grief.

Bit of a thread hijack as the OP has now visited but the good lady her indoors and I are off to Oxford for a day/evening in July so any further recommendations from those in the know would be very welcome (have put stars on Google maps for the places recommended so far).

I haven't been for a long time now but Pierre Victoire always used to be excellent. Lunch menu is a bit of a bargain at £22.50 for three courses.

I visit Oxford reasonably often and always use the Worcester Street car park. Maybe I just get lucky, but there's always a space.

Quod has parking of its own but it is a very tight fit. Not for the faint-hearted.

If the sun is shining this place has a lovely outdoor terrace. Highly recommend for a lunch or drink or two.

You may even be able to park if you’ve a booking smile

My suggestion would be:

Car park off St Clements best Magdalen Bridge. Walk in over the bridge and to town via Longwall and Queens taking you out into the Camera under the Bridge of Sighs. Up broad street and over to museum . Lunch somewhere along Little Clarendon or more into Jericho. Have a ramble around University Parks after museum/lunch as it’s particularly lovely at the moment. Back into town via Cornmarket if you don’t mind bustle or back streets to Turl or via Covered Market. (Drinks on Varsity Club roof could be nice). Back to the bridge via Christ Church meadow off St Aldgate’s or Merton taking you out by the botanic gardens. If you fancy it maybe stop off when going at The Mole in Toot Baldon about 3 miles away but feels in the middle of nowhere (lovely food there too).

Not been on top of the VC since before Covid at a client Xmas bash, must have 2018 or 2019. I suspect 2018.

If you want a real cheat…head to Culham. At Culham train station there is the Railway Inn and a little unknown & unused parking area between the Inn and the main road. Nominally for use by the guests of the Inn, totally safe as it’s unknown.
Then just grab the train into Oxford.

Don’t stay at the Inn though, the landlady isn’t the most friendly person in the world !
