Summer holidays 2022 thread
Discussion
Don’t think we’ve got a current “summer holidays” thread after the last one got closed due to covid bickering!
COVID’s hopefully over and travel is getting back to normal, where are you all going this summer on your holidays?
I’m off to Florida in July and then maybe Greece in the October half term.
Differences this year look like car hire costs gone up in Florida generally (and other places) even though we booked it yonks ago.
I’m abroad a lot at the moment and it’s great seeing covid restrictions finally reduce or go completely in most places I’ve been going to.

This year is a bit of a one off but we’ve already been in South Africa for almost 3 weeks (February). Off to Nice for 5 nights next week, our twice cancelled European road trip to France & Switzerland via Holland is due late June/early July. September we’re returning to Crete after a lengthy absence followed by Naples in Florida in November. As I said, we wouldn’t have so many booked but we’re making up for the numerous cancellations that COVID hit us with. We’re also booked for South Africa in Feb 2023!
Got Boston, Maine and Chicago in May, San Sebastián in July and a little tour of Canada in September. I might squeeze a short trip to Iceland, Dubai or if I can find some way to make it work New Orleans for a few days because they’re so similar as destinations of course.
Been the States twice already this year.
Loving travel being back to relative normality. Not loving the £/$ rate and like you say car hire costs but I’ll take that on the chin if it means I get to go to some new places and some of my old favourites. Plenty of catching up to do.

9 days in Tampa in early September for me, a trip I had planned since COVID hit, 2 of those days I'll be taking a mini roadtrip and overnighting in Savannah and Charleston before back to Tampa, was gutted Mexico got cancelled last year because of the red list and still would love to go to Cancun...next year I think for that.

Have you been to Charleston or Savannah before? Two of my favourite cities in the US. Beautiful places and a lot of good food in both.djc206 said:

I haven't, but I came across YouTube videos on some travel channels and knew I had to go. I've booked hotels in both of the cities historic districts, will be going aboard the aircraft carrier museum in Charleston for definite though. Savannah no real plans yet apart from tour the historic district, and maybe check out a tour in a slave/plantation house. And got to try some traditional southern food while I'm there
Cool. We did the aircraft carrier in Charleston, it’s a good museum. There are a couple of bars at the hotel on that side of the water if the weathers nice. There’s Fort Sumter to see as well. It’s a good city as everything is walkable. Also worth checking the live music listings it’s got a good scene (the hometown of Shovels and Rope for example).Savannah is just stunning. Franklin’s on Liberty for coffee and pastries in the morning before you leave. If anyone says visit Tybee island ignore them.

Savannah we did the paddle steamer up the Mississippi which went to a former plantation house. We also took a trip to Southport which involves a vehicle ferry ride - we had our best po-boy sandwich there. Agree with you on Tybee Island - not much there and the beach sank as you walked on it!
Also worth a trip is Hilton Head Island between Charleston & Savannah around 40 miles North of Savannah (we’ve stayed there at least 3 times) - only 12 miles by 4 miles but full of golf courses if you like golf with some nice restaurants. The beach goes on for miles but very uncrowded as no big development allowed and a maximum of 3 storeys. The turtles come onto the beach to lay their eggs so no artificial lighting allowed especially facing out to sea. Also some big gators there!

Savannah and Charleston both deserve a proper trip over a few days instead of just the one each, but will be good to get a taste of each city. Glad for any recommendations in either place to maximize the most of my time there! Was a bit worried as the TripAdvisor forums say Savannah is a bit dodgy at night but that may be out of date
Depends where you go in the city. Historic district safe as houses. One touristy thing that was actually quite good was the trolley tour, it talks you through the history of the city which although quite sad in parts is very interesting.I’m hoping BA reinstate the planned Charleston direct route at some point. We were lucky enough to be in town for the hatch chile[sic] roast at Lewis BBQ when we there, would love to go back just for that!
