Off to Cornwall (bude area) from South Wales tomorrow, it’s a 3 hour drive and I have a 6 year old so I could do with a pit stop somewhere. I was thinking of taking the m5 then a30.

Anywhere on the way worth sticking our heads in??

Cheers pHers

With a 6 year old I would probably stop twice for a piss anyway

Dingles fairground heritage centre is worth a visit - we haven't been since before COVID but our boy loved it at 6yrs old.
One of the few places where little ones can go on the dodgems (accompanied) and crash into mummy..... The 1940s ghost Train is always a hit too...

If your location in South Wales is three hours from Bude then by my reckoning somewhere in Somerset like the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Hayne's Motor Museum or Cheddar Gorge could make for a nice day out with a roughly equal amount of driving at either side. It would be a bit off the beaten track though, so depends how the little 'un would cope as it might add getting on for an hour to your overall time in the car.

I’ve only done the a361/a39 route and stopped at Bideford. There’s an outlet/retail park with a McDonalds etc. The Big Sheep is that way too, but more a day trip than a stop off.

We stopped in Bideford for a break on the way to Mawgan Porth. Decent Italian if you're stopping for lunch ... https://www.bellunobideford.co.uk/

Good to see the comment about Belluno. Wife and I may well use their restaurant at Newton St. Cyres near Exeter next week on our way from mid Surrey to Falmouth.

You could do Crealy near Exeter.
Personally i would crack on and just make a stop or 2 at services. Taunton Deane & Shell at Sourton Down, assuming you are going via Holsworthy.

Depends on appetite for a stop off but this is my neck of the woods so if it was me I’d take a jaunt of the a361 and head to Woolacombe (voted best beach in the country numerous times) or if that’s too far off piste, Peppercombe beach is on route on A39, about a 10 minute stroll down to a beautiful cove that’s owned by the national trust.

Dunster Castle is a great day out.

Wookey would be good for the little'un, but its a bit of a trek back to the motorway. Mind you the Road from Wookey through Wedmore onto the motorway is a nice drive. (Beware of the sharp left over the bridge with an annoying sticky out bit of brick - ask me how I know)

Cheddar, no. Not enough to do there with a 6 year old.

Notwithstanding my earlier comments about places to visit in Somerset, I'd do something similar. South Wales to Bude in three hours suggests that Gordano services at Bristol would be about half way. I'd just do that one stop. Whiddon Down or Sourton Cross on the A30 in Devon would give you a get out of jail free card if another comfort break was needed prior to Bude.

If the weather is fine there is no nicer spot for a pint and lunch than the luttrell arms "secret garden" in Dunster. You may even find me there occasionally :-)

Op , how was the "3 hour" drive on Friday ? Traffic was coming off the M5 south bound past my place which indicates a snarl up on the motorway. Courier said the traffic was horrific.
