Hi All,

I have finally managed to get all my friends to agree to the dates for the big road trip.

We are going to head out on the 15th July and return on the 19th.

I think Le shuttle will be easiest and best. From Calais we will head to in or around Brussels, for the night and then head to the Ring the following day.

This is a going to be a special occasion of all of us (5 cars) and maybe 9 people in total. None of us have done this before and we have all agreed to make it extra special, to stay in nice hotels.

The stay in or around Brussels should be easy to look-up and book but which hotel do we stay at near to the Ring?

Any help appreciated on hotels and hints and tip for the trip.......we are absolute novices when it comes to this sort of trip but have done various UK driving holidays.

HELP, HELP, HELP.

PS, what else do I need to think about???

Really, we are trying to take it easy and not drive too much, which is a mistake we always make lol.

The Lindner is right on the start/finish straight, has a nice enough restaurant and is only a short walk to Nurburg village if you want to go to the Pistenklause for a steak.

Seriously, crack on to the ring , it’s just about reachable in 4.5 hours and everything is much cheaper than in brussels , I’ve never even heard of anyone stopping there , I’ve driven through and it’s a lot of tunnel by passes , tram tracks and hugely expensive food and drink , wife sometimes works there .
Head straight to Adenauer and enjoy your first visit , and if your worried about driving 4.5 hours in Europe the ring is maybe not the place for you , and I’m not trying to be a know it all dick head by saying that .
Crack on and get straight there , i travel there from Merseyside in one hit .
Good luck , you’ll enjoy yourselves if your car people., even if you just watch , though I doubt you’ll resist lure . Mid week evening sessions are quieter.

And just while I’m thinking, make sure you’ve got some form of health insurance now , a mate of mine had a minor stroke there a few years ago and the first thing I was asked in the hospital was about health insurance , or did I have 2000 euros to start the treatment!
This was back in the days of the eu but he didn’t have his ehic card with him , he’d left it at home for safe keeping , so the hospital very kindly accepted a pic of it with an email sent from his partner. It still cost him for ambulance transfers and the like so god only knows how much it would have cost these days without insurance.

I've never been but I agree with the above, why stop?

Catch the 8am chunnel, you'll be there in time for a few laps before checking in and having a steak and beer smile

If you really do need to stop before Germany then Ghent is much nicer than Brussels

The other option is to take the overnight ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland - it's a 4 hour drive from there, and you arrive at Hook of Holland at 8am. Get cabins on the boat and you're sorted.

Taking the overnight ferry means that all of the added time for the tunnel - check-in, security, passport control, the extra hour etc are all rolled up into the ferry crossing. Plus, assuming you're within 3 hours drive of Harwich, you can leave "after work" on the day of departure - meaning that on the first actual day of your trip at 8:00am you're already in Europe and ready to go.

Ghent is nice as is Bruges, both are nicer than Brussels to be honest.

Did the trip at Easter, seriously just push straight through to the ring. Driving in Europe is a relevation compared to the utter crap roads and middle lane morons that we are plagued with in this country.

It's a really great place and you'll have a blast

I appreciate you are a newbie.

But after doing the ring 4 times a year for the past 11 years, I’ve never heard anything as stupid as stopping in Brussels!

It’s 300 miles from the eurotunnel on fast open motorway!

Just get an early eurotunnel and you’ll be there before you know it.

What sort of motorway speed as acceptable through France, Belgium and Germany?
