Anyone bought a US SIM card recently?
Discussion
This is kind of comical because I am actually form the US, but I am living overseas right now. I am heading to NYC for a week in mid-May. Using my Korean number would be exorbitant, so I am looking to buy a burner SIM card for my phone (iPhone SE) and my daughter's phone (iPhone 7/8). Has anyone bought a SIM card recently that they would recommend? Data would seem to be the key variable, seems like any option has unlimited talk and text, but the data amount varies.
There was a similar thread a few weeks ago, this outfit was mentioned: https://cellulardata.ubigi.com/
I believe you just put their app on your phone it using the esim. Not tried it though.

T-mobile do unlimited text/talk and 3gb data for $15, or 6GB data for $25 (both plus tax). They also do a thing aimed at tourists which has unlimited data for $30.
You aren't eligible for t mobile test drive (free) because your device is too old, annoyingly, otherwise I'd say do that.

I used Arieli Mobile in December. Bought their 30 days unlimited package. It was $94 for 2 sims.
They use Tmob. The coverage was ok where I was (west coast).
The data speeds were also ok. On landing in LA I put the sim in my phone and it worked straight away. Just had to ignore the text messages - I assume there is some sort of re-using of mobile numbers ...
There was one bigger issue though. After 2 weeks one of the sims stopped working. I spent a couple of hours on the phone to Tmob and they could not resolve.
I then spoke to Arieli Mobile but they went radio silence after 5-6 emails. They basically dropped the ball and then ignored me. Not the end of the world but it was handy to have the second sim (for my wife) so we could call each other and she could go on FB etc when in the car. In the end I set up my phone as a hot spot for longer trips so she could use that.
I suspect Arieli Mobile are just a 1 man band going to the local Tmob shop to buy sims and then post out. When you "activate" via their website they manually go on and activate.
For the price I might use again. Perhaps I was just unlucky. It was very convenient.
I kept my UK sim and put it into another phone but disabled data roaming to avoid any fees.

We would have had 2 issues if we had not pre-ordered a sim.
1- The US immigration chappie wanted to see proof of our hotel booking and return tickets. I had not printed any of this off as I did not know they would ask for it. Thankfully the data sim I preordered worked right away so I was able to open my emails and show him the hotel booking and also log into my virgin account and show him the return flights.
2- The travel from the airport to the hotel I needed to use Google maps there was no way I was finding the hotel without it. The car did have sat nav but god knows how it worked so using google maps was so much easier.
If you print your documents and you dont need to use google maps I would get one locally. If you need to use data from the time you arrive then its best to have something sorted before hand.
