I have a booking for a P&O crossing from Dover to Calais (and back) in August. I’m going to cancel as I’m not interested in spending the next few months worrying about what may or may not happen.

A question to the better informed; for the purposes of a DFDS crossing is an ordinary family car with a roof rack on top classified as a “Long low clearance car” or a “High car with rooftop”? It will be under 4m in height and 5m in length.

The latter being the only option that mentions items on the roof. Generic booking websites seem to want to classify the car as the “high car” option which I suspect is incorrect. The difference in cost is several hundreds depending on which of those two categories is correct.

I’ve spent hours on the DFDS customer queries line not getting near to the front of the queue and have not had a response to emails after a week of waiting so hopefully someone here could set my mind at ease.

Also, is Dunkirk any “better” than Calais? We’re heading to the Low Countries.

Also, any reason not to use Irish ferries on a channel crossing? They’re price competitive.

Many thanks.

If it's under those dimensions (but >2.2m high), it'll be classified as a long low clearance car.

If it exceeds 5m in length, it'll be a high car & rooftop.

That’s how I interpret those illustrations too.

As mentioned in the OP I’ve been unable to have the definitions clarified either elsewhere in the conditions of carriage on the DFDS website nor by contacting their customer services department (not a criticism, I’m in no doubt that they’re a little busy right now). Further, if I enter the vehicle dimensions on generic ferry booking websites I am offered the much higher priced “High car” ticket. Hence the confusion.

The only eventuality I want less than paying an unnecessarily high price (in buying the “High car” ticket) is to arrive at the port on the day armed with a “low clearance” ticket and find myself delayed, out of pocket or turned around.

Thanks for your input.
