We've just managed to book a few days trip on the Rocky Mountaineer (Vancouver to Banff) as part of our Alaska & Canada holiday (providing the 'Rona doesn't stuff things up again!) and were wondering if anyone's done this and get any particular bits to not/see etc..

Whilst not done the train trip, we have driven from Vancouver to the Rockies - albeit a slightly different route to see where my wife’s father was born.

Our trip was foreshortened by early snow in September but may be able to give some pointers

Not sure whether you get the opportunity to get off the train much,

Will you be planning on doing anything at either end of the train trip?

We're on a 7 night Alaska cruise after which it's Vancouver for 2 nights, then the RM for 2 days overnighting in Kamloops. Final stop is Banff for 4 nights then home from Calgary.

Got the glacier trip, lake Miniwanca, Vancouver tour - usual tourist stuff. Really wanted to make sure we didn't miss something obvious

4 nights in Banff is a good length of time - would recommend a trip and walk at Lake Louise - up to the glacier if you really feel up to it or at least to the first tea house.

Cable car or again a walk to the top of Sulpher Mountain worth it too.

Give the Banff Ave Brewing place a visit too.

thanks for that - you were correct about time needed (and visiting LL), I suspect we could have happily spent another few days in Banff (maybe hired a car for a day or so in that case).

The whole trip was jaw-dropping and, whilst expensive, an amazing holiday

My parents enjoyed a trip many years ago and the photos showed very comfortable seating, wonderful staff and great food and drink. The train doesn’t travel at speed and the ear outdoor viewing is stunning. The train stops overnight so you miss nothing from wildlife, to scenery to the aromas of the Canadian countryside. You will have a great time, and there are USB charging points in every seat.

apologies chap - I should have mentioned we've actually just come back from it. You are 100% on the mark with your comments, it was breathtaking and just soooo much to see. cloud9

Did you get out to Lake Minnewka? (*Childish snigger). We were in Banff last year and going back in late September this year and wondered if it was worth a trip out there, we’ll have a car.

If you go back the icefields parkway is worth the drive. We did it on a stty day and even with the weather doing it’s best to cock things up it was stunning.

We did the Icefields Parkway in winter and it is gorgeous. It's worth noting that they don't clear snow from it....but I guess the clue is in the name. idea
