Hi

Looking to go for a 5 night break in April with the family to Lisbon and Porto and wondered if anyone on here had done this trip and any tips/suggestions?

It looks a cheaper option to fly into Lisbon, stay there and then either train or hire car up to Porto and then fly back to the UK from Porto.

Any good places to visit while we are there?

Thanks in advance

I loved Lisbon for a city break. Plenty to see and do walking around the various districts.

The tram system and funiculars are great to experience and see the city.
The timeout market on the river is a foodie delight.

We also enjoyed getting a boat across the river and walking up to the Christ statue for excellent views over the city.

Both wonderful places to visit and we did this exact break 12 months ago. So much to see, personally preferred Lisbon, but that may have had something to do with it raining while in Porto. Make full use of the vintage trams to get around on, as they are superb and a great way to see the city. I think you can purchase an unlimited travel ticket for the tram, which from memory was about 6 euros or so. We did Porto first and then got the train to Lisbon, very quick, cheap and easy to do. As for attractions, Trip Advisor was spot on, so I would follow that. The only thing that can get pricey is the port houses in Porto, so I would say pick one (not necessarily a well known one) and go for that.Food wise, in both cities there is massive choice, but as was mentioned, Time Out market in Lisbon is superb. In Porto, take a tram down to the Foz Do Douro area which is right on the sea. Some great little beach side bars there too.

Did a long weekend in Lisbon a few years ago for a mates wedding. Nice city, plenty going on at day and night. Loads of bars and restaurants to hang out in, plus wandering along the river to the gallery (cant recall the name) was cool too.

Drove to Porto from Bilbao over Xmas with the missus. Nice city, but very poor and very run-down. was cool in a bohemian way, but was a bit short on decent drinking and eating places. the upside was that it was bl00dy cheap.

Lisbon gets my vote....though if you're doing both you'll have plenty to do if you don't spend to long in either

We had a great few days in Lisbon in September 2018.

Another vote for the Time Out Market being great - tons of choice
Get the train out to Cascais - get off at Estoril for a very pleasant walk along the prom
Also the train to Sintra for the Pena Palace - consider how you get to the Palace from the station though. We walked both ways (plus all round the castle grounds / gardens) and from memory I clocked something like 29,000 steps that day
Elevador de Santa is good at night (with no queues)
Eat your own body weight in pastel de nata (we used to finish each night with a pastel and a glass of port from Fabrica de Nata on Praca dos Restauradores)
Search out places locals will eat like Zé dos Cornos - tucked up a side street but great for ribs and pretty cheap

Thanks all, some great tips there

We've booked it anyway. Flying into Luton, staying for 3 nights, then have hired a car to drive up to Porto as it was considerably cheaper even with fuel than the train for the 7 of us

Will note those places down and check them out!

Good shout on Sintra, it is quite stunning but a right old trek up there to start with. It is stunning and well worth a visit.

Rather than start a new thread........

Planning a trip to Lisbon over next few months, and looking for recommendations for evening meals smile

Went 3 years ago and loved it, hence returning, but fancy trying a few different places and happy to look at mix of cheaper and more pricey.

OH wants to go to this one https://belcanto.pt/en/#cozinha but she does not seem to realise I am a medium build wage slave rather than a powerfully built company director type biggrin

I’m sure that place is very good but you don’t need to pay a fortune in Portugal for cracking food!
