Hi guys,

Driving from London to Monaco next mo th and was wondering if anyone that had done it before had some tips?

Certain places to visit on the way?
Certain roads to drive?

Many thanks!

Route des Vins D'Alsace then when you are not far away anywhere around the Gorges du Verdon. Some nice Col's there around Nice too, I liked the Col de Vence, did the Col de Turini but was not really wowed. Lots of amazing roads. Just don't overspeed. Found manned speed traps in the most unlikely of places.

We went down through Macon and Dijon as places to stay they were nice. Gorges du Verdon is a great shout, driven through/around there twice and always great scenery. Route Napoléon is a must, great driving. When you come back, go east from Monaco and head along the riviera and then up towards Milau to go over the bridge and then on to Rheims to finish things off with a champagne tour or two.

Another vote for Macon, lovely spot - then stop in Epernay on the way back to fill up with Champagne smile The Route Napoleon down into Grass is very nice too if you can spare the time.

I'd recommend a stop at circuit Reims-Gueux, it was a Grand Prix road racing track and some of the old pit stands have been kept - is pretty cool to visit on the way.

It depends how long you're going for, but our route was from Calais, down to Lake Geneva on day one, then down to Antibes via Route Napolean for day two, on day 3 we did a morning drive along the coast to Monaco and a lap of the Grand Prix course.

As others have said, Route Napoleon is a must.

Enjoy it.

we did this but took a detour and went via the Millau Bridge (had to be done - just love the bridge!)

It is compulsory to stop at Reims to take the pic like above with the MX5s.

The Col de Turini down through Sospel is great. Done that one a couple of times after the Monte.

I guess this type of trip has been done thousands of time by PHers...

Is there a tried and tested route/stops for a first timer driving through France?

Are there any recommendations for nice but affordable hotels (Not Harry Metcalfe money....although I can imagine they are smart)

Travelling from Manchester and can have upto 7 days to drive there and back.

Car is nothing exciting sadly but comfy and decent on fuel - 6 series bmw 3.0d

The Port Palace hotel is reasonably priced ( by Monaco standards) and has some of the best views across the harbour and maybe one of the nicest restaurant views too. Make sure you don’t get a ground floor room!

We usually stay at Villefranche Sur Mer a few clicks away.

Lovely place compared to the concrete jungle of Monaco.
