I would double check the forecast. It doesn't usually rain all day in the summer, you tend to get a monster thunder storm in the afternoon which often clears up by early evening.
Plenty of shopping malls in Florida! :-)
This is proper rain. The forecast shows this week as sun, with a small chance of rain, and next week is rain, no sun.Plenty of shopping malls in Florida! :-)
We've been many times before, so were looking for stuff to do thats not normally on the radar.
Assume we are talking Orlando/Kissimmee area? Do you have children in tow?
The answer is - get up early.
Current (today's) forecast calls for rain, but it's great right now (8.00am ish - 85 degrees) and usually is until mid afternoon, so go to parks, play golf etc., 1st thing.
In the pm head west (Tampa Bay area) for Dali Museum, Tampa Aquarium, Bayshore Dr/Davis Island and maybe stay over for an evening in Ybor City (not for kids).
KSC has a new tour opening imminently, which includes visits to the shuttle launch pads - previously inaccessible - but go in the morning, because the Atlantic sea breeze collision happens early in the afternoon out at the Cape.
Other than the usual gun-range/indoor putt-putt, go-karts, mall shopping and established shows, as mentioned already, you are pretty much restricted to lounging/boozing/grazing when it's pissing down outside. Lightning risk is real here, so outdoor activities should be thought about seriously. I say this because lake fishing is particularly good in the rainy season, but being out on a lake waving a lightning conductor around is asking for trouble.
Next week's forecast does suck somewhat, but it rarely rains all day here. Although I would hope that anyone visiting would get a break with the weather, we really do need all the rain we can get. I live on Lake Conway and the level is down 2 feet, so although it's no fun for visitors, we kind of welcome it - and at least it's warm rain....

Yes we have a couple of kids in tow, and its orlando. KSC sounds good, been there a few times so was going to give it a miss this time. The answer is - get up early.

Is Daytona worth a visit? We could head up there and look around the track (my son is a petrol head as well)

We used Oakridge gun store last year, good place but you will need a car to get there. Its about 20 minutes drive from International drive in the direction of the Florida Mall.
Can get expensive if a number of you are going to shoot, ammo adds up and if like me you've got a quick trigger finger you will go through quite a lot of it. My wife and son decided not to shot when we got there but I still managed to spend about $100 in an hour

Daytona Beach and New Smyrna are nice flat hard sand beaches that you can drive onto (though your car rental agreement may ask you not to). The Speedway itself is a pretty desolate facility when there's nothing going on (very different of course when there's a quarter of a million fans packed in there). You can get a trolley tour of the track, but it's a bit naff to be honest. Is Daytona worth a visit? We could head up there and look around the track (my son is a petrol head as well)
The Daytona USA attraction at the Speedway is OK - the IMAX thing is very good, but will be a snore for anyone who isn't into roundy-roundy crash 'em, bash 'em.
There is usually short (dirt) track racing at new Smyrna Speedway on Friday and Saturday nights and RWYB drag racing at Orlando Speedworld at Bithlo FL on Friday nights.
Daytona's Iron Horse Saloon and Lollipops tit bar are the more established adult entertainment venues - though not for kids obviously.
You might consider Blue Springs State Park, which is on the way to Daytona, just off of I-4 at Orange City. The Manatees and gators are great to see and you can scuba in the springs and sink-holes, as well as kayak, tube ride or swim in the St Johns River.
Close by is Mt Dora, an historic, artsy, bohemian community that is a nice alternative afternoon out - not so good if it's slashing down of course.

There are several. As mentioned, Oak Ridge is a good one - I use it a lot, in that I live close by.It is located on S. Orange Avenue, just south of the intersection with Oak Ridge Road. It's easy to miss it, so the landmark is a Dunkin' Donuts store immediately opposite.
There is also one on South OBT called Reigs. It's a well run store and range, but it's located in a crappy part of town, which goes against it. There are also two Shoot-Straight ranges, one in Apopka and another in Casselberry. The Apopka one is good, because the range is longer, so more appropriate for long-guns. Finally if you want to try your hand at skeet/trap or more 'specialist' weaponry, try Hernando Sportsmans Club at Brooksville FL (approx 50 miles NW of Orlando in Pasco Co).
