Mexico - playa del carmen
Discussion
Would this actually be the resorts at Playacar
I went to the Riu Tequila a few years back. Its all gated and fairly safe although the side streets of Playa Del Carmen shows you a little taste of real Mexico.
Stay our of the jungle and dont be alarmed by all the armed police in pick ups between Cacun and Playacar
Any more questions just ask away

I was there in June for 2 days. We stayed in a hotel near 5th Avenue (which is the touristy bit), but went for a walk up towards Playacar. The beach is pretty good too - and there was lots of nightlife if that's what you are after, including a club called Coco Bongo which is supposed to be very lively! If you don't want the full tourist prices, just head inland a street or two - I found a very reasonable bar on street 10 Nte. between ave 5 & ave 10 - can't remember the name, but its opposite the Tank Ha dive center (where a couple of very nice young ladies work!!)
Absolutely no reason to stay on the hotel compound - plenty of taxis, walking during the day is fine (just wouldn't recommend it too late at night). Do the trips to Chichenitza & Tulum, and you could do a day trip to Cozumel if you like diving (although I heard it isn't that great compared to Belize!). Some of the Cenotes are worth a visit too (there are lots of them near the road between Playa and Tulum). We went to one called Dos Ojos (Two Eyes) - its two sink holes linked by underwater passage that you can dive through, or just snorkel around them both individually - pretty impressive!

I spent a few days in a small hotel in Playa del Carmen. Absolutely no issues with security - we wandered around the place most evenings, some very nice restaurants. No hassle, the locals were very friendly. Tulum and Checheniza very nice. Coba was also great if you like the Mayan ruins but not the hoardes of tourists.
We went end of June this year, few rainy days and one flooded apartment but the place.
There really is something for everyone there however if you're staying close to the clubs which are open till 6 can be a little noisy!
Lots of nice bars and restaurants and I whole heatedly recommend a day trip to conzumel and rent a car and drive down the coast. Some really good diving/snorkelling of that's your thing too.
