My daughter is 17, and has a chance to go to Russia with college in September.
She has never held a passport, and the last time I had one, it was a 12 month temp one (remember them?)
Anyway, we are going to have to get her a passport sorted and I am finding conflicting information, on the Home Office website it says that 16 and 17 year olds can apply for a child one as they are under 18, but it will last 10 years, yet over on Direct.Gov it says that all over 16s have to apply for an adult passport.
Does anyone know which one it is? Also, I believe that she will have to go for an interview somewhere, are these held in regional offices or will we be expected to travel down to London or somewhere like that for it? (we are in East Lancs)
Many thanks in advance, just want to make sure we have all the info etc seeing as we only have 2 months to sort it in.

She will need a Russian visa, and to qualify for that she needs an invitation from an organisation in Russia - a tourist company could do this - presumably the college is organising this. To get the visa a quick visit to London or Edinburgh is needed.
http://ru.vfsglobal.co.uk/ my advice for this is get it right first time, otherwise you have to queue for 2 slow PCs in the office to correct errors! Obviously she'll need her passport first!

She has been told by college that she doesn't need the visa, so I am guessing that the college have sorted that out, apparently all she needs is a passport and spending money.
It's the confusion on the ages that's getting me, two different gubberment departments giving differing info (why am I surprised)

Personally, I'd rely on the Russian Embassy telling you this and not the college. I may be wrong but I can't see why they would relax their visa requirements for this trip. If you do need a visa, I'd pay a premium and arrange through a visa agent.

And anyway, I remember a recent uni trip where the uni sorted out visas so I'm pretty sure its a normal thing.
