Looking for some advice on where to stay for a week in SE Wales over the summer.

Thinking of somewhere near Merthyr Tydfil / Abergavenny. Picked this area as there are good paragliding sites nearby, and Ive been given permission to take the glider smile

Will be primarily a relaxing family holiday though, so somewhere relatively pretty with a few things to do.

Thanks in advance. What can you suggest?

Brecon and Crickhowell are pretty agreeable places.

Abergavenny is not bad either. Merthyr is the best located for getting to places by far, but not exactly ideal as a holiday destination. Are you camping, caravanning or hotelling?

Brecon / Crickhowell / Abergavenny get my vote.

I'd seriously avoid Merthyr...!

Last time I went to Merthyr it was at the time of the foot and mouth outbreak, and the town was surrounded by burning piles of sheep. It didn't make it much worse.

I'm from the valleys, but all my family are gone, and live a long way away, so no where to stay if I go back so I always stay in the travel lodge, easy acces to the M4 and the A470 and you know wha you get, North of Merther and into the National park and there are some ok B and B's but south all I've seen that I like ate the travel lodge tyoe places or Cardiff

If you want top hotels there's plenty to chose from in the whole area Merthyr/Brecon/Abergavenny. Some are on here, http://www.rarebits.co.uk/hotels.php but there's quite a few more. All depends on your budget, Brecon has plenty of B&B's. Merthyr is an industrial town in massive decline, never was a place to holiday. Three miles north though your into a national park.

There's also the Brecon-Monmouth Canal if you fancy staying on a canal boat, or just renting an electric boat for the day, which is great fun for the kids.

Some great comments about Merthyr. Seem to remember studying the place in geoegraphy. Didn't come across as a nice place then!

Was thinking more of renting a small cottage. 2 bed would do.

Thanks for all suggestions, will check them out. smile
