I know this is not the usual 'what can I do on my £4,000 a night private island in the Indian Ocean' question.
I have managed to get a weeks self catering for the family including ferry to the Isle of Wight for under £200.
What is there to do on a budget on the island? We are National Trust members do are the sites there worth visiting? Are there any other recommendations?

Black gang chine is good for kids, it's a little activity park, shouldn't be expensive.
The garlic farm is good, it's free to go in, you can taste everything, not sure if your kids would like it.

The zoo is great. Also make sure you have fish and chips on the quay in Ventnor, it's fantastic.

The Garlic Farm - just for lunch and the shop. The Garlic Beer is an acquired taste!

Park at Yarmouth and walk to Freshwater and up Tennyson down if you like longish walks. Or start at Freshwater bay if that's too far.

Also, near Yarmouth is a museum of Harry Ferguson which I think houses the 4WD GP car and maybe a few nice grey fergie tractors!

Find Castlehaven Lane and the cafe at the bottom.

Robin Hill is a nice day out with the kids. We love to take the hovercraft from Ryde to Southsea for a day out, spend a few hours in Portsmouth harbour.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Had a look at them online. I'm now praying for good weather for a week starting on Friday 13 July.
Have also been told that all three Cunard liners are in Southampton that day so as well. Hopefully get some good views from the ferry.

Oh, and....

If you get bored on the Island, head over to Yarmouth, and get the foot ferry for a day trip to Lymington.

Don't bother with Cowes to Southampton unless you want to go boring-concrete-shopping-centre shopping.

The south bit is quite nice, much less developed (St. Catherine's Point, etc.).

East bit is oddly much like the bit it sits opposite (Portsmouth).... Avoid!

Yarmouth much like Lymington, only smaller.

If you fancy seafood, there's a little restaurant in Yarmouth, run by a raging alcoholic, it's great food, and always good for a laugh, brilliant atmosphere. You'll need to book though, it's always packed.

Fingers crossed the weather turns for you!

Thanks for the continued suggestions. Lots of interesting looking places. Turns out the Olympic Torch is on the island when we are there do will be going to see that. (Don't care what other people think as our family thinks the Olympics is worth seeing as I am unlikely to have the opportunity again. We have got Paralympic tickets and I am a volunteer Games Maker driver at Weymouth).
We are just looking forward to get away by ourselves without visiting family or friends and having some quality 'us' time.
But Osborne House looks like a must and lots of trips to the seaside. Oh and the zoo and the Needles Battery and....
We will see what we feel like and what the weather brings.
I've heard that Minghella's ice cream is a must as well.

Minghella's is very nice but the chocolate can be very rich and a bit bitter so its not ideal for kids.

One of the things to keep an eye open for are red squirrels as there are no greys on the island. If you want to guarantee seeing some go to the Gurnard Pines holiday park just outside Cowes and go for a walk around in their wooded area. They encourage them out in the open with monkey nuts in the sand fire buckets and stuff, if you have young kids I am sure they would love to see them.

Carisbrooke castle is excellent for kids, it's quite big, so loads of room for adventuring.

Fingers crossed there's something on when you'll be there?

Finally....

Hurst castle is only just over the water (I think you can see it from Blackgang Chine?), may be good to go to on the way, or way back.

http://www.hurstcastle.co.uk/

It's about a ten minute drive from Lymington, then a half-hour walk along the spit (great fun if it's windy!), or you can get the ferry over from Keyhaven (I loved doing this as a kid).

You are all (apart from one who I am sure comes from an equally pleasant part of the world) coming up trumps.
Well done all.
Will be raiding the tourist office when we arrive and gain a fabulous collection of leaflets.
My 4 year old daughter is really excited about getting the ferry to go on holiday.
Call us daft maser_spyder but we live in Dorset so have visited a lot of the mainland places already. Hurst Castle is an amazing place, both to get to and visit. But we have never been to the Isle of Wigjt even though we can see the Needles from our local beach.
