We went at the end of July last year and stayed around Gouves.

It was bd hot, but I coped and I'm a pasty fair skinned type!

Heraklion is a nice place to spend a day and have a wander around with some interesting shops and historical stuff.

There are a couple of ace waterparks too, and Knossos is meant to be well worth a visit, although we never made it there as it was too hot.

Been twice and both times we stayed in Elounda, check out the Elounda Blu hotel.

Nice place and plenty to keep you entertained for a week, we spent a few days by the pool mixed with a number of day trips in a hire car.

Would recommend Zeus cave for a day trip, stunning scenery on the drive up as well

The beach that was in the old bounty adverts is also drivable in a day

A boat trip out to Crissi island was also nice.

As above, I've done Elounda as well as Agios Nikolaos a few times. All good, quiet if you pick the right place out of town, then into town - enough to see and do.

And cheap right now biggrin

We did a boat trip out to 'Spinalonga' Island - a former leper colony. Nothing too amazing, but makes you think and is a little sobering, kinda like a 'lite' version of visiting a Nazi Concentration camp - if you get me?!

Another vote for Elounda, stayed at the Aquila Village which was nice enough.

Vote for most bizarre shop in the village being the Russian Furs one - it was mid 30's when we were there hehe

Agios Nikolaos. Nice harbour resort & the place they always photograph to promote Crete.

I was in Gouves for the last 2 weeks of July last year too!

Knossos was a bit pants TBH.

Hania is lovely and we wished we'd stayed at that end of the island smile

If you have a car, get yourself down to Elafonisi beach. Lovely! Chania is a nice enough town too and I enjoyed the trip to Spinalonga.

I went a few times with my parents when I was in my teens - the last time would have been when I was 15 so it's about 18 years since the last time. They are very much into the locals' way of life and have made friends with many of them, so they still return. They have always stayed in Platanes, just outside Rethymnon where it is pretty quiet.

Wherever you go in Crete, I'd recommend a trip to the Samaria Gorge. It is one hell of a hike so make sure you take decent walking boots if you fancy giving it a go. It's 16 km long but you can do a lazier tour by entering from the south and coming back out the same way.

Don't go to Malia tho!!

I ended up there with on of these 2 week, cheap "get you resort allocated on arrival" type holidays. Oh dear!! Maybe I am an old fart but I survived 2 nights then got an overnight Ferry to Athens and spent the next 10 days island hopping back to Crete.

On the other hand.. if you are a hard drinking, nocturnal, dance-loving, hip and trendy yoof with white dancing gear then get yourself to Malia wink

Get up into the mountains late afternoon/early evening and watch the eagles hunting ... one of the best moments of my life when they fly down into the valley about 4 metres above your head, and you hear and feel the power of these fantastic birds

Cafe du Lac on the harbour was very nice when I went - good jazz nights - a few years ago now though

Spinalonga and Minos Palace at Knossos are both nice for a day out, if you like history.

edited to add - we stayed at Minos Beach Art Hotel just outside Agios, and it was quite nice smile
