Hi folks,

I am driving down to Mansfield from aberdeen tomorrow and i am crossing from junction 40 of the M6 to Scotch corner of A1.

The route is dual\single carriageway, i heard on the radio today there was a horse fair there, so googled it and found it was the gypsy national horse meet, and horses could be on the road.

Has anyone driven this stretch during this event, should i expect big delays or just the odd hold up behind carriages until dual carriege section etc?

Just to get an idea as i will plan for delays etc on the way down, but wondered if it was a shambles and blocked roads etc.

cheers

The A1 has now been upgraded to A1M, and as such has Motorway status.
No horsedrawn vehicles are allowed on motorways so you should be ok.

I live 12 miles from the junction that you mention at Scotch Corner and the A66 Westbound is effected with the horse n cart brigade but not the A1M.

Hope this helps.

Cheers guys, I expect some delay/slow traffic from Penrith to brough as after that it's dual all the way till the fork that takes you to scotch corner. Hopefully shouldn't be too bad as today was first day of show so hopefully might be quieter tomorrow. Coming back on Sunday I will be on a66 at about 9:30am so should be quiet.

Hope it's not a disaster :-)

Lay burn lad, I will travel on the a66 as the A1 from Edinburgh to south of Newcastle is a bad road, it's windy and often clogged, I have found, the road from Perth to Glasgow A74 to the m6 is a lot quicker.

No problem, I only ever travel as far as Dunbar, and have not experienced any problems apart from dodging the blessed speed cameras.

I usually get from Dunbar to Scotch Corner in 2 - 21/2 hours, I didn't think that was too bad, but you probably know better than I do.

The weird thing is the Edinburgh to Mansfield is only 20 miles less than the Glasgow-m6 route. Though the horrifying amount of speed cameras on the A1 is silly.

Will just keep fingers crossed its gonna be clear, don't mind slow just not closed road as having crohns disease isn't fun in traffic :-S

The horse fair is at Appleby, rather than Brough.

The only hold up on the A66 should be on the single carriageway section between Brough and Appleby, as there will possibly be one or two horse drawn traditional caravans at any one time during today/tomorrow (Friday). Do beware of slow moving, horse drawn caravans in lane 1 over Stainmore, though.

Beyond Appleby through to Penrith there should be no delays.

I certainly wouldn't re-route through Newcastle/A69 to avoid.

Many thanks, that's grand I thought it might be till I passed brough, but hopefully will only be the wee stretch.

Looking forward to a good drive in the A3

I travelled the 66 last Saturday and the area around Appleby was full of travellers. Every side road was full of caravans and transit vans with horses and ponies grazing at the side of the road. The road itself was moving well but beware of an unmarked a6 avant and a mobile camera van.
